William and Mary Out of State?

Hi,

I am a senior and interested in going to a good small college. Vassar is my dream school and I am applying there ED. My counselor got me hooked on William and Mary. Even though we are out of state, we would pay less at WM than we would pay for a private school. What would my chances be if I applied RD? A match? reach?

Stats: 1530 SAT superscore (800 math, 730 verbal), 3 Subject tests over 700, and 3.72 UW/4.22 W (top 15%, at highly comp hs in TX, school doesn’t send rankings tho), 10 AP’s (only 4’s and 5’s), decent EC’s, great essays, and IB Diploma Candidate.

My teacher writing one of my rec’s is an alum of WM, not sure if that helps :frowning:

I’ve had 2 relatives go there as well as a few friends. I’m not sure what the acceptance rate for out of state students is (I live in-state), but those stats would definitely get you in if you lived in-state and applied for early decision. I’ve visited the campus multiple times and the school is definitely in my top 3!

Bump

The Virginia State Council of Higher Education has a breakdown of average SAT scores by In-state/Out-of-State on its website. I don’t think it breaks down class rank and GPA the same way though. http://research.schev.edu//enrollment/b12_report.asp

It looks like your SAT would be a bit above average, your weighted GPA would be about average and class rank a bit below average, but as you say, the school does not provide.

Good luck.

Note that boys have a significantly higher admit rate than girls (http://time.com/money/4148268/colleges-men-higher-acceptance-rate/)

@IzzoOne are the ranges posted superscored ranges? My actual SAT score is kinda crap but still high up in the mid 50

Would it be a reach, target (match), in between?

@gadeorade I am confused. Are your SAT scores “crap” or “800 math, 730 verbal”?

@prodesse 800 and 730 superscore, but 760 and 710 single sitting, but my gpa sucks, so I’m wondering if it is a target or a reach because of the lower gpa?

W&M would probably be a match for you in-state and a reach out-of-state. JMHO.

Also does being male help a little bit in admission, I feel the statistic of being male giving you an advantage for W&M is kinda misleading? I am male btw

Maybe a little? But it may vary from year to year.

My daughter is from TX and was accepted RD last year. 1530 SAT, 35 ACT, 10 AP classes, was last kid in top 10% at at a highly competitive school in DFW when she applied. Unweighted gpa 94.3/100 or 3.83. National Merit Commended. Had 200+ hours of community service, 4 year varsity athlete and Sr yr team captain (not participating in college), 2 other major leadership positions, average essays, above average rec letters, worked 10 hr/week. Good luck! Apply early for merit based scholarships - my daughter applied at the last minute and missed out. Consider explaining your GPA in an essay, if there’s a reason its lower due to family responsibilities, team/club sports, work, etc.

My son was accepted OOS last year- 1510 SAt, 35 ACT, 4.0/5.25 (5.08 when he applied) GPA, 13 APs, 3 DECs, close to 300 hrs Community Service, worked nearly four years, founded a Tutoring Club at school, Honors Orchestra every year (State level), wrote a kick-ass essay- Accepted, and was offered decent aid/grant. We would have paid about 40,000, even if we declined the loans and work-study. I think the essay is very important at UVA, and William & Mary- they made references (esp WM, in the “Good Things” postcard) that made us believe they were!
