FYI for people thinking of applying RD…it’s probably not that useful to judge your chances based on other people’s test scores and GPAs, which is basically what you’ve got here. For one thing, the people who write on College Confidential represent a particularly self-selecting group of people that are obsessed with getting into college (and subsequently really hung up on these numbers) and for another, the two most important things according to Williams admissions are first and foremost your transcript (not just GPA-it’s in the context of your school offerings) and then your essays, followed by ECs. The admission officer I talked to actually qualified test scores as basically at the bottom of what they really consider, and I know at my school we’ve had kids accepted with a much wider range of scores shown here (that excelled in various other ways)

I know for some this is reassuring and others not, but that’s the deal…

Very “thoughtful” of you but as you say this “self-selecting” group probably already knew that. This type of thread generally reinforces what colleges have put online themselves with the class profiles. Numbers are the only objective data that we can actually share (and of course, your school profile matters too but we can’t be asking people their school profiles to the context that the colleges look at them with), but when the school you attend is the higher end of public high schools, generally comparing GPA will get you an idea of what type of academic strength(s) are accepted regardless of ECs and Essays seeing those, you can change (well, not EC’s).

But, thanks for the post! Too bad the test scores are at the bottom… Oh, well, I’m glad they look at EC’s as quite an important factor, unlike some other colleges, though! :)

I am one of those anti-SAT people, I feel great animosity towards it…

Ok well I took the SAT and skipped questions by accident, zoned out, and basically screwed up…

I am applying to Williams College RD and could someone just read through my info please.

I am a former IB candidate, did most of my schooling in an international school in Bolivia but I have US citizenship. Graduating from an international school in Guatemala that is an AP school, i am currently taking AP Psych, Enviro, and spanish. High GPA, 200+ hrsof community service hours working with orphans, bilingual, Great college essay, various varsity sports(won MVP in some and was captain in others

is it hard to outweigh my SAT score with a good background?? or should i try to find less selective schools??

I think that it is more than possible to outweigh a bad SAT score with your credentials. There are a lot of invariables that none of us can really take into account though. I know that the Williams admissions office has mentioned that the SAT is at the bottom of their list of criteria for admission (below things such as transcript, difficulty of course load, essays, etc). Your extracurriculars are impressive, I only have one question: Do you plan to continue to play the sports in college/have you contacted a Williams coach if so?

Williams said that about half of the people who apply with 800s on the SAT don’t get in-and this is not meant to be intimidating but to be encouraging in the sense that they care more about the whole candidacy than just a small part of it. There is an article about this on the front page of williams.edu if you are interested, I found it pretty cool. Also, your diverse background/really impressive community service experiences will really interest a place like Williams, and a great essay is definitely really important.

I would say you look like you have an impressive candidacy-I got accepted ED and I similarly had one weak spot (my high school gpa wasn’t great) but I think I made up with it with athletics, extras, and good SATs and great essays.

Good luck!

Everyone who applies to Williams has great grades, fab ecs, and fab recs. They say they don’t “rely” on SATs, but then you’d better be VERY special in some other way. You need to tie your diverse background in wioth your essay and community service, or you are just another wannabe…

thanks for the input, and ya, I did tie that all in for my college essay…

“You need to tie your diverse background in wioth your essay and community service, or you are just another wannabe…”

The point of your essay is to show that you can write well and think intellectually. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a table of contents for what you have already stated in your application. It is always good to elaborate on your strengths though.

This may be a bit late but congratulations on all of you who are joining the purple valley in the fall and good luck to the rest of you. i’m doing an article on ED admitted students for 2014 and would love your input so if any of you would like to comment, just reply to this. Its just a couple of questions
