I have a friend who got into both. I think he'd be happy at either, and it's obviously his decision to make, but he's a Stanford legacy and he gets a lot of pressure to make that choice...I'm a pretty committed LAC enthusiast so I'd kind of like to convince him that he has other options, or at least make his choice an informed one. I also think his ego could do without the obligatory Stanford inflation.

However, Williams's preppiness/isolation deterred me from applying or learning enough about it to be sufficiently persuasive. I think it would work better for him, however. He is very athletic and outdoorsy.

Suggestions??

Oh, and his academic interests are versatile, but especially in maths/politics/biology.

Mm, another concern of his was that Williams students were not particularly engaged in politics. I told him Stanford would be no better. Does anyone have any input on that particular issue?

I'm also interested in your impressions of each school's diversity.

I think Stanford would be better in the politics area especially because palo alto is near highly politics involved cities like berkeley and san francisco. also stanford would provide more opportunities for him after college, and in addition, stanford has a decent athletics department (all D-1)

I have heard that many Stanford students choose Stanford over Berkeley to ESCAPE the activism. But I don't know much about either so you could be right.

Isn't it pretty difficult to play varsity for a D1 school? o.O I thought most of those positions were recruited...

I don't know much about Stanford, but a majority of the students who get in to both would be better off if they chose Williams. Some discussion and links here:

Another simple test is for your friend to e-mail a couple of professors at both schools. The Stanford professors won't reply. The Williams ones will.
