Winning the Gates Millennium Scholarship Sweepstakes

Man, when do seniors start applying for this?

nygirl, The Gates pays for any unmet need and whatever the student’s contribution is supposed to be (loans or work-study). It does not pay what the school says the parents must pay. Your school needed to send them a budget that included room, board, books, etc. If the budget is wrong, you need to talk to get the school to resend it. Your parents still have to pay any portion the school says is their portion.

ehhh… so because I’m a white kid, I don’t have a chance at this opportunity. cool.

^^ yeah basically.
Im a Questbridge scholar/finalist and a Gates scholar they’re both great. i have yet to see how the gates scholarship will help with my aid… not that i needed much help anyway since im totally covered by the school.

Gates will cover your work study, your other FA will not.

Apparently gates foundation is super rich.

it has an endowment of 25 billion and got 10 million in private donations last year not counting the money from gates himself or warren buffet(did i spell his name right? i think i did)

all i’m saying is, if a scholarship came out where black kids weren’t allowed to apply… oh gosh, the world would be up in flames.

jussttt sayingg…

^^ there is no need for that. you know full well why there are scholarships only for minorities.

stop being stupid please. there are millions of scholarships you are eligible for so don’t whine over this one.

The girl in the article was Viet…so being Vietnamese counts as Pacific Islander? Even though Vietnam isn’t an island…? Haha how did I not know this?

never mind…its not. I just looked it up.

therefore, asian americans can apply too, not just asian pacific islanders

Hi, I am going to apply for the Scholarship for 2009-2010. I am going to be a senior this year in high school and wanted to get all the advice possible so I to can become a finalist. I am thinking about beginning my essays this summer. How long should each essay be and for the question about what subject I excel would I have a lesser chance of receiving the scholarship if I write about an actually school subject such as History??? It would be great if any of you could answer my questions! Thanks so much!

Kinda raceist don’t you think?

It is not racist to offer a scholarship to ethnic/racial minorities that have been systematically disadvantaged by the higher education system in this country since its inception. As was already mentioned, there are millions of scholarships that white students are eligible for, and scholarships for disadvantaged minority students are nothing new, so I’m not really sure why people are so upset about this.

As for an earlier snide comment, there are plenty of scholarships that black students (and other minority groups represented by this) can’t apply for. There’s an article that I can’t find at the moment that pointed out that there are a lot of scholarships that are reserved for traditionally white ethnic groups, such as German Americans, Irish Americans, Italian Americans, Polish Americans, etc., and there are especially a lot of scholarships for Jewish American students as well.

There are scholarships for everyone out there and the vast majority of them have no binding on ethnic membership. White students go to college far, far more often then African Americans, Latinos, Asian/Pacific Islanders and Native students and one of the many reasons is financial concerns – the Gates Millennium scholarship is one of the scholarships out there that aims to reduce that disparity.

Kinda hard to get one if your a mixed white (many different white backrounds). I was just pointing it out.

So wait. What if you’re mixed? Like your dad is black and your mom is white? What if your mom is black and your dad is white?

(This doesn’t apply to me. I’m just super curious.)

Each essay should be as long as it takes to answer the question. I’m a gates scholar this year (frosh at 'SC!!! :D) and some of my essays were 1000 words, and others were 400. They can tell when you BS something, so write from your heart and finish when you have nothing else relevant to say.

For the excelling in subjects question, I wrote about school subjects- I thought that’s what the question was actually, pertaining to school… anyways, I don’t think you should have an issue if you write about excelling in a school subject.

Best of luck, and you can PM me anytime. Glad to help!

All my answers were at least two paragraphs. i just told the truth they asked a question i answered as honestly and as indepth as i could. as for the final question i had an essay that i used for my college apps that fit well so i cut and pasted. i guess they liked me.

Thanks guys so much that helped alot!!!

dont know about chinese, but I do know a korean who won gates…so obviously it’s not just pacific islander.
