"The scholarship will pay tuition, fees, books and living expenses while she earns a bachelor's degree and could support her through graduate school, based on certain conditions."

Congrats to her. She really deserved it, I can’t imagine working 40-60 hours a week while keeping up my grades at the same time. Congrats to you as well 12layla12.

legendofmax, you would not have been eligible for GMSP. It is only for AA, Asian, Hispanic and Native American applicants, and I see you are a caucasian male.

QuestBridge is a scholarship similar to the Gates Millennium Scholarship, except it doesn’t have racial restrictions. Of course, GA2012MOM knows this, but just putting it out there for others. :)

The Gates Millennium Scholarship is an outstanding accomplishment. Everyone who receives the award does deserve it. However, I still feel like I am dreaming when I think about it…

Do you think the young man in the article should be ashamed that his parents have a low-income? I see nothing wrong with this; if anything, he should be proud that he succeeded in winning a national scholarship valued at tens of thousands of dollars despite obvious obstacles.

I myself was in three local papers after having been awarded a QuestBridge scholarship. The articles described my plight, not unlike – if not worse – than the young man in the news article above. Following publishing, I was contacted by local companies, non-profits, and the mayoral office for internships, funding, and inspirational speeches. I see nothing wrong with the label of ‘low-income.’ Important people like to surround themselves with young men and women who are ‘self-made’ with a bright future ahead of them.

**Asian Pacific Islander American include persons having origins from Asia and/or Pacific Islands. Asian includes persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent. Citizens of the republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau are eligible to be nominated. This is not an all inclusive list.

i’m confused. i’m also a gates scholar and they’re refusing to help pay for my books and living expenses. i’m not complaining - not at all - just genuinely confused and was wondering if anyone could clarify it for me b/c i have a feeling that the article might have made a mistake in describing the scholarship

From the Willamette website: Willamette Welcomes Gates Scholars - Eight 2009 Gates Millennium Scholars will attend Willamette this fall, including nearly one-third of Oregons recipients.

nygirl786, if you feel your award is not correct, your FA department at your school can request from Gates a modification of your award once during each school year. There is a deadline for doing this (I’m not sure what it is) so you should contact your FA office.
