Winter Session 2011-ouch

D. wants to do the Winter Session but the costs are steep. Registration begins today for Jan. 3 start.
$4,040 OOS 4 credit course.
$500. housing
$658. mandatory dining plan
$64. student health fee, $30. registration fee, $25. student comp fee.
OUCH! $5315.
Is there any way to apply for finaid for this additional session without outside loans? She really needs this course and will be taking a full course load over the next years, so it's not like an added whim.

Winter session is a huge rip off. My suggestion is to take the class either at home at a state school or see if anyone state schools offer the class online over winter and transfer the credit. Will save you more than half.

Winter Session is expensive, for sure. Like the OP’s daughter, my DD needed a course that just didn’t fit into her Spring/Fall schedules. She elected to take the course locally during the Summer and transfer credit. Just be sure to check with UDel beforehand to make sure there won’t be any problem transferring credit for the course.

Amen to those who say it’s a ripoff. Even worse is their insistence on that $500 housing fee, given that you’re already paying for the room. When we looked at the school they pushed the lack of additional housing cost as a selling point. Then they changed the policy. My son took a class at the local community college in NY last summer and had it transferred to UD. Of course they charged me a $75 fee (originally showed up on my bill as $150 but they corrected it on their own) for transferring the credits but the course was only $660 for 4 credits so it was a major savings. Amusingly, all of the kids in the class wee from other schools, and 4 or 5 were from UD. And yes, you definitely want to make sure the course is on the approved list ahead of time, or get someone in the department to approve it before you take it.

My son is doing some research with a graduate student on sports statistics with one of the sports teams. I told him that they should find money to pay his room and board if they want him to work on it over the winter break.

Thanks, looks like we’re stuck. It’s not offered anywhere close to home. Since it’s related to a change of major D. will enter into Spring into the second section. Likely UDel will probably not approve it to be taken elsewhere. You also need to take a 6 credit min. to qualify for any federal finaid in Winter session. No scholarships or grants apply to Winter sessions. Parent Plus loans require enrollment for 6 credit hours.

This has increased the COA this year by a lot. I do feel ripped. :(

Do be sure to complain to them about it. Not sure it will do any good but the more people they hear complaints from, the better. Of course, the best message would be reduced registrations, but obviously your hands are tied.

Yes, I think the original requirement was only that you needed to enroll in a food plan and not the room fee. I predict NO more Winter Sessions for her in my crystal ball. She may try to squeeze a study abroad in, but as I understand it, you will still need to pay the credits for the course (as would make sense). Summer might be the better option for Study Abroad.
