I applied for Fall admission, but unfortunately I was denied because I had withdrawn from a class 2 years ago. I am now retaking the class (that I withdrew from a year ago - Fall 2011), but due to a (recent) death in the family, I am going to have to withdraw.

Should I even bother applying for Spring semester, if I explain to them why I withdrew? Reason is I flew overseas to see my dying grandmother, and a week later attended her funeral. Or should I wait to apply for Fall semester?

I had about five Ws and I got into almost every school I applied to. Ws tell a story and it’s up to you to control and tell that story in a mature way. Step one is almost always to take responsibility for the withdrawal.

You should reapply if you think you’ve demonstrated that you’ve addressed the issues that caused you to be denied previously. Have you actually talked to a GS admissions rep about why you were denied originally? A single W, or even 2, won’t kill you, unless they feel it indicates you won’t be able to handle the intense workload at GS. In that case they’d want to see you do well in a challenging semester. If you haven’t demonstrated that yet, I wouldn’t expect the outcome to be substantially different.
