I'm majoring in engineering probably after undergrad i'll be working in an engineering field for a few years. I want to get an MBA though. Does it really matter which field i work in or is it better if i work business line of work?

It’s probably more optimal to choose one of the ‘high-prestige’ business careers such as consulting, Ibanking, venture capital, and the like. Those have proven to be faster means towards entering top B-schools.

I second sakky’s opinion. However, as an engineering major, it’s difficult to get hired at consulting, ibanking, and vc firms. This is especially true if you attend a lesser known engineering school. At my UG (top 10 engineering, top 5 bschool), Bain only paid lip service to the engineering students, no other consulting recruited there. There was no IB or VC recruiting. However, unless you want to go into those fields after MBA, I think it’ll work out for the best. As working in an engineer capacity will give you better work/life balance. It is possible to get in to top schools without business experience, but I have to admit it’s a bit more difficult, simply because the AdCom are more familiar with business terminology and career path. So when you list your job titles and accomplishments, the AdCom will not have a good understanding of the responsibility and leadership behind those roles. Outside of the top 20, I think it’ll be a bit easier to gain admittance as engineers.
