Work First or Go Straight to Grad School?

Huskem,
My S is determined to go straight into a PhD program in clinical psych right from undergrad. How difficult is it to get in to a program without that year of work. He has and will have a lot of research and internship experience before he graduates from Pomona. Can it be done?

arizonamom: clinical phd programs are ridiculously competitive, and with the average program accepting approx. 6/300 applicants, admissions are pretty much a crapshoot. its easier to get into med school! anything that makes him stand out for whatever reason will help.
i had a 3.8 gpa, 1500 GRE, 2 publications, 3 professional presentations, fantastic recommendations, and loads of research experience and relevant volunteer experience, and i didnt get in anywhere this year, despite the fact that people with much lower stats did. so its like playing the lottery.
