what is considered paid employment? Would you conisder tutoring or babysitting paid employment? Do people usually report this on their tax returns?

You received money as compensation for any work you performed are paid employment. If your employer issue you an 1099 form at year end, then you have to report your income, if you do not get 1099, then, just let it go and hope Sam don't come looking for you, most likely he won't.

Welcome to the grownup world of tax compliance, hey. According to the tax laws, your babysitting/tutoring business is self-employment, for which you would file a Schedule C with your 1040 tax return. In all likelihood you would not owe any income tax, but you still have to report it. And also pay 12.4% in FICA taxes to support social security and medicare for us senior citizens.

If you do not report it, you are breaking the law but no one but you will know. Integrity is what you do when no one is looking.

ALL forms of income generated from work is required to be reported on an individual's tax return...even if it is income generated from illegal activities. To do otherwise is considered tax evasion and can ruin your life forever...

Is it worth the risk of being caught? Fines...jailtime...long-lasting garishment of wages, etc. Just report your income and be done with it!
