Hello, I'm new here I've been looking all over the place to try and find an answer for this, I applied for Federal Aid and got it but also received work study. The issue is that I have a record no felonies or anything like, but also more then just one charge, 3 are class A and the rest are just C's or B's one is also a DV(disorderly conduct)from when I was 18 and an assault from when i was 21 or 22 cant really remember. non violent I'm 25 now. Any input would be greatly appreciated it!!!

What is the issue? Are they asking about misdemeanor convictions? I would imagine this could vary by the type of job you’re seeking…ask the campus placement office.

no, but I thought they did a background check involving any job on work study, or is it just a check on felonies? And I will in the morning. Just extremely curious since I just got my award letter today.

Well, you’re not eligible for ANY federal aid if you have a (felony) drug conviction while you’re in school. Other than that, I don’t think you’re going to undergo rigorous screening to make copies, work in the dining hall, hand out locker keys or beakers, etc. If you were going to be doing research or working in some other types of sensitive jobs, such as the campus daycare center, they may ask about your record. Whatever it is, just be honest and sincere about your desire to make a fresh start.

thank you very much sk8rmom I appreciate the quick feed back!! would i just go into the career center and apply threw there? My school lacks in the work study information area big time, gives no details on what to do or where to go its rather annoying. but thanks again for all your help!

I was told that work study has started doing background checks, I have some felonies that are fairly new, I was being beaten and I cut the person but because we don’t have a self defense law, I plead guilty. I don’t have any drug charges and this was my first and only charge. will this stop me from getting the work study.

Some work study jobs do background checks. Both of mine did because I work with children, but they’re likely not going to do them if you work in a caf or something.

Work study isn’t a thing that can do background checks. If you’re eligible for the aid then it will be up to the employer to decide whether or not to hire you for the ws job.

Our school does background checks on everyone that applies for work study, I just felt out the consent form today. They said it just started this semester, but, everyone has to do it. I just wanted to know if they were only looking drug charges like FSFA or are they looking for everything.
