Worksheet B on FAFSA

Hi, a dad here. I've been lurking on College Confidental for months now, but this is the first chance to ask a question.

On Worksheet B of the FAFSA, the last input requirement on the Student side is "Money received, or paid on your behalf (e.g. bills), not reported elsewhere on this form)." Since high school students in their senior year have most of their bills paid by the parents, what exactly goes here. I don't have a clue as to the exact amount I've spent on my son in 2004. What really goes in this line? Do I estimate all food, clothes, allowance, etc. and take a guess at his annual expenses?

Thanks in advance for any info.

No. Whatever you give to your son is not included since your income will be reported in your section of the FAFSA and would be double counted if you add the portion that you spend on your son here since the two parts are added together. An item that might be included here is if Grandmom pays for his private school tuition or Uncle Bob sends a $1000 check, or Godmother pays for the piano lessons. Or money your son earns on the side by babysitting, raking leaves, dog walking, gifts, etc. You need to make some decision on exactly what you report. As you are probably beginning to understand, they are going to drain every possible source of money before your son gets a dime of aid. You also need to watch that you do not double count interest on any accounts of his if they are reported on your return so they need to be reported on your income part of the FAFSA. I have seen people accidently do that. The two parts are added together.

..even I understood that.
