Worried about engineering

I have been accepted into an engineering program in college and everything. So I am not worried about getting accepted anymore. But what I am worried about is whether I will be able to actually complete the program. I have wanted to be a civil engineer since I was in about 8th grade. The only problem is that I don't show the typical attributes of an engineer. I am better at English and history, math and science were my worst subjects. I mean, I never failed any of my math or science classes, but english and history always came like second nature. But engineering is what I want to do, and I cannot think of anything else I would want to do. I love math in the sense that it is challenging and I learn new things, I am just not the best at it. I am just extremely worried that my math and science won't be what they need to be and I will end up failing and not finishing college. If I could get feedback, that would be great.

If you love math and solving problems and have the motivation you will succeed. I would never survive college in a major such as history or English because while those subjects are easy they are also so boring.

Do what you like and through hard work you’ll be able to make it.

You’re an Aggie? I’m going to Texas A&M in the fall!

And that’s exactly why I don’t want to major in those subjects, because they come so easy, it would be no fun.

Good engineers come with all sorts of attributes, but the one that is fairly universal is that most good engineers have a willingness to work hard.

Yeah. I saw that before I can register for classes I have to take a math placement test. I will be put into precalculus, but the site said about 30% are advised to take this class first, so I guess I am not the only person who isn’t great at math.

Yeah man I know the placement test you’re talking about. I took precal my junior year and then AP stat my senior year, that along with the fact that I didn’t look over materials or anything and just took the placement test had me on the border line of precal and calculus. I ended up deciding to go straight into calc I and did great but I do know quite a few people who took Math 150 their first semester at A&M.

Engineers need good writing skills to communicate professionally so if you go into engineering then you can use those skills. I say just go for it and try your best and don’t worry about being a “typical engineer.” After the first two years you find yourself not wanting to do it… you already got a lot of GE out of the way for another major. So just go for it.

I took AP calculus AB last year, and this year I don’t have a math class. BC wasn’t offered. And I am already not the best at math, and I have to take that test. I will end up in pre-calculus my freshman year, but I guess there are a lot of people who do that?
