I've tried to write a few of the college essays and my attempts really seem fresh, from the heart and very interesting. The only thing is that most of the essays have a rather abstract style. This style is very typical of my writing style and the topics that I've chosen. I think it's nice .. but it doesn't really seem to be what the colleges are looking for when they say 'concrete examples'. Should I change my style/topic or stick to my guns?

That's a really good question. I'm having the same problem. I've written an essay I really like but its long and really abstract in thought. I've written other essays that are more 'normal' but they are just okay. I don't think they exemplify who I really am as much as my abstract essay.

Can you give me an example of what you mean by "abstract"? Do you mean that you're ruminating on subjects of an abstract nature, or that you're being too vague, perhaps?

I'm talking about the topics I've chosen. But even my writing style is rather formal - maybe that's why I'm finding it abstract. But that's just the way I write - it'll really be awkward and would sound positively forced to write any other way. Sigh.. I wonder what I'll do...
