Worth extra $10k/yr for UC Berkeley vs. U. of Toronto?

I’m a senior from Tennessee who applied to a bunch of schools, and the only ones that accepted me didn’t give me any aid. I’ve narrowed my decision to UC Berkeley and UofT. So far, the factors I’m considering include strength in chemical engineering, Jewish life, career opportunities (both in jobs and entrepreneurship), and weather. Also, my brother went to Berkeley and lives across the bay so he could help me navigate Berkeley if necessary lol. For these reasons, I’m leaning more towards Berkeley, but it is about $10k more per year. Again, both UC Berkeley and UofT are expensive. Is going to UC Berkeley worth the extra cost?

Where is the money coming from to pay for college?

How hard will it be to scrape up the extra $10k each year?

one thing to keep in mind with Oof T , you pay in US dollars so depending on the strength of the dollar the delta vs Oof C B may be bigger, go to Canada college is about change and you will save 40k for grad school if you need it. Toronto is a great multi cultural city

I would expect both schools to be academically very challenging.

How you are going to pay is important. Will you be taking on debt? Have you accounted for the current weak state of the Canadian dollar in figuring out the cost of U of T?

I would be tempted to go to Toronto. It is a great city, very multi-cultural, and you will gain a slightly different perspective on the world.

Having a brother in the area is helpful. The UCs are quite expensive however for out of state students.

@happymomof1 My family is covering it. It’s just a matter of how much they have to pay, and how much of it is from my grandparents. Scraping up that money is not easy, but not the hardest, either.

@DadTwoGirls I do think that USD will weaken bc of recent news and my own predictions. I’m not taking federal loans, but I am paying my family back for part of the cost.
