Worth the cost?

It may very well be too late but Towson and UNH take first year transfers into their accelerated 5 yr programs - look quickly to see if deadlines have passed. Towson is pretty reasonable and this likely is/was your best option.

If the above options are not available, pursue the most affordable path to your UG degree meeting the prereqs, getting a solid GPA (3.5++++, and higher in prereqs), and a good GRE. MSOT programs won’t care where you went for undergrad so eliminate the debt.

You may also want to explore the possibility of working before getting your master’s degree. My daughter goes to SUNY Binghamton and is considering OT or PT as a career. Her plan is to complete any pre-reqs needed at Binghamton and then evaluate her situation (go to grad school or see if she can get any kind of a job in an OT/PT office and go from there). My daughter started at a different school and then transferred to SUNY for a variety of reasons (partially financial). I was glad she transferred to SUNY Binghamton because I think it is a better school and almost half the price.

Good luck

Just for grins, here are the prerequisite classes required for Mary Baldwin OTD (OT Doctorate). This is an entry level OTD program, not combined with U/G degree. 3 year program, starts in June of each year, 117 credit hours post U/G degree

Course / Credit / notes
Introduction to Biology 3-4 Lab not required but recommended
Human or Vertebrate Anatomy 3-4* Lab not required but recommended
Human or Vertebrate Physiology 3-4* Lab not required but recommended
Physics 3-4 Recommended but not required
Introduction to Psychology 3

Abnormal Psychology 3

Introduction to Sociology or Anthropology 3

Lifespan Human Development 3 Birth to Death (for some undergraduate institutions, this may require more than one course to fulfill the “birth to death” requirement.)
Statistics 2 Can be from biology, mathematics, psychology, business; or Research Methods
Medical Terminology 1-2 A medical terminology certificate can be used to fulfill the pre-req requirement for this coursework.

Doesn’t look like this type coursework would be easily combined with a Communications Curriculum if you were thinking of going this route

@sybbie719, CUNY-York is the ONLY CUNY College that offers a Occupational Therapy Program (There is no fee for the Occupational Therapy application. No GRE required.).

https://www.york.cuny.edu/academics/departments/occupational-therapy

It is a BS/MS program and students gain admission after Completion of a minimum of 60 college credits (including pre-requisites for the Occupational Therapy program). A minimum grade of C is required to transfer credits from non CUNY colleges.

https://www.york.cuny.edu/academics/departments/occupational-therapy/admission-to-ot

SUNY Downstate Medical Center (Brooklyn) offers both a Physical AND Occupational Therapy Programs. Cost is ~ $11k per year for Tuition and Fees.

For Physical Therapy (DPT), CUNY-Hunter and CUNY-Staten Island are the two CUNY options.

CUNY-York College is probably the least expensive OT option available anywhere and can be completed in 3 years after admission (having completed 60-credits)!!

Op completed on year as a communications major at Syracuse and accumulated 30k in debt after one year. any of the the CUNY/SUNY options

OP can do the program at York apply for a paid masters from NYC DOE (she would then have a service commitment) further reducing her debt

http://www.teachnycprograms.net/getpage.php?page_id=105

@privateID, if your D is interested, NYC DOE will pay for the OT/PT masters at the following schools (something to keep in mind)

Columbia University

Keuka College

Long island University

Mercy College
New York Institute of Technology

New York University

SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn (SUNY Downstate)
Touro College

York College

NYC DOE Salary scale

I’m not sure OP wants to be an OT. I think she wants to be in communications, but thinks OT could be a good backup career. I think it’s a mistake to take on that amount of debt, and worse to do it for a communications degree with a vague plan of pursuing OT later. The schools she was accepted to at each university sound like the communication schools, not science.

“I’m not sure OP wants to be an OT. I think she wants to be in communications, but thinks OT could be a good backup career.”

This probably makes the large debt load even worse, since jobs as a communications major may be more constrained in terms of location.

SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry is right next to SU, and it has a communication degree (journalism and environment?) as well as many other majors. It might even be free with the new program!
