Like doing community service at all, or the number of hours.

I'm a rising junior and I have around 115 hours and plan to do more, I feel motivated to do more so that colleges can see I care, but is it really necessary? I would rather invest 3 hours on a Saturday studying (or chillin with my friends :P) then doing community service, if it didn't matter THAT much.

Help me out here.

if volunteering were a make/break factor, then colleges would either require it or list it as a very important or important admissions factor. it’s considered if you choose to do it. but it’s not required that you do it. if it means anything my brother got in to Penn(Wharton) and Princeton without putting any on his app.

Doing community service just to get the hours won’t make or break your college app.

Having outstanding community service – the type that truly makes a difference – could tip you in at the relatively few colleges (and those are the nation’s most selective – places like H & P) that factor ECs and service into admission. What you’re talking about doing, however, wouldn’t impress such colleges.
