Would it help your chances of getting into a highly selective college if you could get an article published in a magazine or newspaper? I'm talking about like an editorial or something.

How much of a difference would that make, if any?

Will it make a difference? It’s just another blip of who you are. Nothing to be shy about. But don’t expect people to say “wow”. It’s not akin to playing at Carnegie Hall or being a Siemens Finalist of a top 50 recruit in some sport. It’s a nice accomplishment. Relish it for what it is.

Yes, it would probably help a bit in that (1) it’s a good accomplishment that’s probably not very common among high school seniors, and (2) it makes your application more interesting.

Of course, the more well-known the magazine or newspaper, the more this will stand to help you.

What’s the readership? Does it traditionally accept student submissions? Did you write about a subject coherent with the rest of your application?
