Would I be crazy to pass on Fincance CSOM?!

When i stepped foot on campus all I could hear about was how awesome the Finance program was and by for how it was the best program in CSOM. Would I be crazy to pass on that for a concentration in say Computer Science or Econ? I want to eventually start my own startup company and if that doesn’t work than I want to land in management consulting or in some sort of international business. Finance is interesting but I’n not sure if I want to dedicate so many classes. I also don’t want to limit my career options or work in Investment banking. But, I just can’t ignore all those amazing comments I heard about the program!

Would I be crazy to pass on the Finance concentration in CSOM?

It’s really a minority of finance majors that go into investment banking. Many go into consulting or corporate finance so don’t worry about the stereotype. Study something because YOU think it’s interesting. If you like computer science or economics, then go for it. You’ll have to take the intro course in finance anyway. If you like it, you can add it as a major. You’ve got a lot of time to figure it out so don’t worry.

If your passion is in some other field, like CS or Econ, then you may be crazy to choose CSOM Fiance. Your heart should be into whatever choice you make.

if you have some AP credit, consider a double major. Biz+Econ are rather typical. Indeed, every Wharton undergrad earns a BS in Econ. Or, go general biz+double and plan on an MBA in Finance later.

If you want my personal opinion, I would argue that CSOMs best and most highly rated department is our accounting. It doesn’t get nearly the attention of, say, finance because its not as “sexy” of a major, doesn’t directly get people into prestigious investment banks, and (if you’re a guy) it doesn’t quite get the response from the ladies when compared to saying your a finance major. But, about 95% of the faculty is outstanding, and close to 40% of the graduating accounting CSOM class goes into Big 4.

The point I’m trying to make is that to pass up Finance is certainly no big deal, as all the departments in CSOM are great. Also to highlight is our great Info Systems department which does bi-annual trips to tech firms in NYC and Silicon Valley.

I’m not too sure if Accounting is for me? How strong is the computer science program? An Econ and Comp Sci, or Finance and Comp Sci double concentrations seem attractive to me.
