Would my personality work at Bates?
Forgive all my narcissism.

I consider myself to be a friendly, Jewish northeasterner who appreciates diversity and has a thirst for knowledge. I want to study in a good political science department and good creative writing, while being surrounded by very passionate and intellectually stimulated people. I adore New England, having lived in Connecticut, but I love New York City even more. I don’t drink but don’t mind having alcohol around me-- so long as I am not pressured to partake. I also enjoy the presence of alternative/hippie kids.

Ok, so I feel like you’d fit in really well. I actually have a really good friend who I could describe with almost the same paragraph – weird.

If you want a city feel, Lewiston is not it, unfortunately. But I love going to school that is self-contained: I find it breeds a closer community. Batesies won’t pressure you to partake in drinking, though on the other hand you may find that your social options are limited if you don’t drink. I wouldn’t worry about that though. I’m a junior (I drink), and most of the people I know do too, but one of my best friends doesn’t. [Side note: A lot of people go into college thinking they won’t drink and then find it’s really not a big deal, and start. So alcohol shouldn’t really weigh into your school decision; your opinion may change when you get to college]

There are definitely a lot of alternative/hippies at Bates, so you’re in luck there. Batesies are very intellectually driven and all that. However, it seems to me that a lot of Batesies make an effort to kind of dissuade that image. Almost everyone is very smart and into what they study, but everyone tries to project a down-to-earth, non-academic image. This can have pros and cons, and doesn’t mean you won’t have stimulating conversations all the time - because you will.

We have a great political science (we call it politics) department at Bates (I’m a major). As far as creative writing goes, you may have less luck. I don’t know for a fact, but I’ve heard an English major friend of mine complain about the lack of creative writing courses offered. You may want to email someone in the department or check the department webpage yourself, though.

Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Also, read my post on Bates vs Wesleyan-you sound like a great fit…
