Would I have a good chance of getting into Columbia from Berkeley?

Does it help being from there rather than a community college? Do most columbia transfers come from community? At berkeley, most are from cc.

That’s a tough one. I would email the admissions officer. They are very picky at what credits they allow to take the place of the core curriculum.

most columbia transfers are from peer schools or at least top 50 on the usnews. There are some transfers from community colleges to the school of general studies but that again is for non-traditional, generally older, students. I have not seen any one successfully transfer to columbia college or seas from comm. college. To have a shot even from a peer school you will need almost perfect gpa and high school stats which are in line with columbia’s incoming freshman class profile. With the transfer acceptance rate close to 5%, I would suggest doing extremely well at berkeley and then apply for transfer

hmm…well that’s a better answer than i expected! what do u mean by peer schools? like barnard n such?

top 40 universities and liberal arts colleges perhaps

yeah, the worst schools I’ve witnessed are rutgers (4.0 and other things) and GW (studying international relations along with pickering fellow at the state dept). Most come from schools like cornell, nyu, brown, barnard, virginia, vanderbilt etc - it’s usually fit reasons, sometimes prestige reasons. Across the board, I’m pretty sure accepted transfers had great records at peer schools and stellar records at slightly less prestigious schools.

They have to see how you’ll add significant value to campus and you have to have a compelling reason to come beyond I want to be in NYC or I want to be in a top college / research univ.

wow! i never knew that! well i kinda love berkeley…the location is good (it’s a mini-city), the food is good, the people are alright (i’m starting to make better friends), the frat/sor. scene is pretty good, classes aren’t that hard, etc. i’m worried that columbia wouldn’t compare (in the nicest way…obviously i revere columbia but i’ve never been so i don’t know what it’s like). I’ve seen nyu and it’s good. i don’t think i’d mind going there…is columbia similar?

Regardless of which school you intend transfer to, you need to be able to articulate compelling academic reasons for your wanting to do so.

Give Berkeley a try that’s what I would say.
But Columbia is a lot different from NYU

Berkeley has excellent faculty and classes are great especially when you take classes on your Major subjects. However the financial crunch is indeed taking its toll on Berkeley.
There are successful transfers from Berkeley to Columbia.

^yeah ucb is well respected enough that if you do well there you’ll meet the academic achievement bar for columbia. getting in though, requires much more than meeting the academic achievement bar.

Would a 3.82-3.87~ GPA from Berkeley be a good transfer candidate for Columbia?

It’s probably not impossible, but there are so few transfer students taken that you’ll need to have a very good reason why you want to come to Columbia. On that note, OP, if you apply as a transfer to Columbia without having ever visited the school, I guarantee that you will not get in. The whole point of transfer admission is that you know the school very well and exactly how you can take advantage of the opportunities you’ll have there. If your idea of Columbia is “like NYU, but so much better,” you’re not a very compelling transfer candidate.

3.8+ from berk would tell them that you have what it takes to succeed academically here - many more burdens of proof than that however
