would it be good to do a double major in industrial engineering and finance?

do they two go together? would it be too difficult?
what does go well with industrial engineering?
are there good jobs for those 2 majors together?
salary?
thanks

IMO, it’s a good combo… eventually.

The problem with double majors is that you are inevitably hired for only one of them, not both. I can’t even remember seeing a job description in my job searching that says “must have BS in XZY and ABC”. In addition, the jobs you can get with a finance degree, in some cases, you can also get with an industrial engineering degree. So, it all depends on what you want to do. If you want to get into middle management quickly than IE might have a leg up. However, middle management is nowhere to live forever.

I say eventually because a better combo would be a BS in IE and a MBA or, if you aren’t patient enough, a Masters in Finance, or both MSF than eventually an MBA. A Masters in Finance has less emphasis on work experience for admittance is only a year long. It might even be a good idea to get your BS, a job, and take 2 years going to school part time for the MS Finance, work 2-3 more years earning promotions, and then go for your MBA.

I’ve posted about this very frequently. I encourage you to look into a joint Business and Engineering Program. I am in Drexel (in Philadelphia’s) Business and Engineering Major and it’s really been fantastic for me- think of it as a combination of industrial engineering and operations research with a heavy emphasis on entrepreneurship, math, and general business. There are some other programs like this, but most of the ones I know are in Pennsylvania including UPENN and Lehigh. I wrote about the Drexel’s B&E program here if you’d like to read more about it: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/drexel-university/680451-drexels-business-engineering-major-unique-prestigious.html

Good luck!

What has been explained to you many times, and you still fail to realize, is that there are many schools with very similar programs. You were given links to Stanford’s program, Duke’s program, Georgia Tech’s program, etc.

I’ve known three people that did that double major, and maybe a dozen or so more that did a BS IE with a minor in finance. It’s a good match and the classes seem to compliment themselves well.

Every student I’ve seen use that combination went into consulting (keep in mind that it was a small sample size, though). The thing is, though that as Japher mentioned they would have all probably been hired with just the IE degree. All are under 30, and so far two of them have gone back for MBAs, with the third one likely to do so eventually.
