Would taking a year off of college harm my chances of transferring to a good school?

I’m a 19 year old male and I’m going on my second year of community college. I didn’t do well the first semester due to the fact that I couldn’t make it to class often. I’d sometimes have to leave class to help a sick relative. I failed 2 classes. My second semester I did decent. I only failed chemistry but I wasn’t expecting anything above a D. There’s a lot I want to do and I want to get a new car. I’m considering taking a year off so I can work, get a new car, and do everything I want to do. That way when I go back, I can focus on my education rather than something else. I’m wondering if taking a year off would harm my chances of being able to transfer to a good school. If I were to take a year off, what are some negative effects it could have on my education?

Don’t worry about the year off. Take a year off. Go back to community college when you are ready to strive for A’s and have a real chance to get B’s.

College needs to be a commitment that you don’t start until you are ready to stick with it, including attending ALL classes, paying attention in ALL classes, and doing ALL homework on time or early.

Once you finish community college with substantially better grades, there are lot of universities that expect some mature students to be applying from community college. There really is no age limit.

My mom did it. I was going to try working full time and going to school but with my schedule, I don’t see how that’s possible. What I really mean is can I lose my funding? Can it harm my chances of getting into a good school (ex. UC schools)?

I agree…don’t start college again until you can fully commit…you have to be able to have time to go to class and do homework.
