Would these circumstances warrant a letter to the financial aid department?

@blackkitteycat What are your ACT SAT GPA stats?

@blackkitteycat,
It looks as if you are from Texas and you have been admitted to some Texas schools.

How much can your family afford to pay?

Are any of them within commuting distance? If you and your parents cannot make dorming work in your home state then you need to attend the one that you can commute to.

For your own sake you need to take the OOS schools off of the table. You will always be an OOS student and close to full pay.

@Madison85, If I remember correctly, OP has a 1270 SAT and 3.4 UW GPA.

I believe @blackkitteycat has said she plans to go to a community college first,…then transfer to a four year school.

The CC costs $3000, and she has said that she can cover that. On another thread, she asks about getting any need based aid at her community college. She is trying to figure out if she should take a loan for this year…and keep her savings for the four year school.

Her EFC is $17,000…so she is not going to get need based aid at that CC.

@blackkitteycat can your parents contribute to your college education at all? At any point?

You said on another thread that you did get some aid at your other accepted schools. What were the net costs? Are anynof them close to where you love…and would, they be affordable if you commuted from home?

@thumper1, The mom did say they’d pay for a meal plan. How much are they?

<<<
My mom just says that she wants me to be responsible for my own education so that i’ll care about it more.
<<<

Ha! She hasn’t told your sister that she wants her to be responsible for her own gymnastics so she’ll care about it more.

Wow

@thumper1 No, none of the texas schools are close to commute. I live in Austin, so the only one is UT and I got denied. It’s not that my parents can’t, it’s that they don’t want to.

@austinmshauri The meal plans are around 1-1.5k

This student also says her parents are not eligible for a PLUS loan because if miney issues they have had.

@blackkitteycat have your parents already applied for a PLUS Loan? Were they denied this loan?

If your parents DID apply for a PLUS and were denied, YOU can take an additional $4000 in loans…making your total $9500 instead of $5500.

I’m not suggesting you do so…but you “could”.

But I didn’t think that parents could apply for a Plus yet for,the 2017-2018 academic year. Am I wrong?

When you go to community college for two years, and can cover that from savings and work earnings, then consider taking your direct student loans, if you can, and save them for when you transfer to the 4 year school.

@thumper1 My mom refuses to apply for the loan because she doesn’t want it to mess up her credit. She told me we weren’t eligible for it after reading about it on the fafsa website

Express to your parents that it is unfair for them to invest in your sisters dream, but not yours. Any money that is spent on your sister’s aspirations should be matched dollar for dollar in your college fund. You sister might have to cut back on her gymnastics opportunities so you can have college opportunities, too. That’s fair. Also express to your parents than pouring thousands of dollars into hobbies is short sighted… when college funds are empty. Your sister will likely want to go to college one day, too. (even if she’s an Olympic hopeful, etc.)

OP is at a CC on full scholarship.

@MaryGJ @Madison85 Thanks for the advice. Madison85 is right, i’m currently at a CC on full scholarship. My parents are now willing to help pay when I transfer.
