My son in just finishing up a summer internship. He is a senior computer engineering major, due to graduate next spring. He tried applying for about a dozen computer engineering internships, came close on one or two, but did not land them. Anyway, he was able to land an internship with the state turnpike working in the civil engineering dept. doing spread sheets and other entry work. They did let him design a web site. They are very happy with him, and he will be be getting some excellent references for his r

He’s at a disadvantage to those who have had meaningful internships. It would be prudent to do some computer engineering research for a professor this year.

The market is tightening, so I think he’ll have opportunities, but he’s at a disadvantage with no meaningful experience that he can talk about, and no relevant references.

A job in what - software engineering? I doubt that an average student from an average school majoring in something with “computer” in the name will have much trouble finding a job writing software. It may not be the very best job, but most people don’t get that, least of all right out of college.
