I know this sounds stupid, but I just don't know.

Okay let's say some hypothetical person (or me..) is as follows:

Both parents born in Africa, as was he

One parent from northern africa, so white, while the other from southern, so black.

The kid is a citizen. Would he be elegible for African American Scholarships, or do you have to be a descendent of people who moved here long ago (whether by choice or not).

I cannot see any reason why you would not qualify, though there could be some small local awards with additional details which do not apply to you.

I think you need to read the guidelines of each scholarship or college carefully (ie, they may not all define “African American” in the exact same way).

I know that there is variation in how First Nations or Native Americans describe who is a tribal member too.

Please don’t be shy about asking questions directly to the organization/college where you’d like to apply. It’s better to be frank and up front rather than go to the trouble of sending in paperwork and then learning you didn’t meet the criteria. How happy you’ll be to get the email response that says you are in the clear to compete!

As time moves on, you’ll have a better and better idea of the ideas out there and be better prepared to articulate the special attributes you have. Good luck!
