Would you please peruse this list?

I believe I read on here recently that it would be good to visit schools that represent different types-big, medium, small, big city, remote towns, etc. That way your daughter can get a feel for which environment she prefers. I agree that it would get costly to try and visit all the schools on her list.

On the topic of BW I would definitely have your D watch the Stages series of videos the school put up on youtube. It follows the MT class of 2013 from Freshman year to graduation. You can see the type of environment your D would be in and see if it would be a good fit. Be wary though, after watching these videos I fell in love with the school and it’s now tied for my first choice school!

Myloves…My D is also a senior BFA MT at Coastal Carolina, and they have every intention of sending every BFA MT and Acting major to the NYC Showcase.

Futuremillie6… Which school is tied with BW for your first place spot? Just curious…

Myloves, if your D visits Montclair, let me know and I’m sure my D would be happy to show her around. She loves the program which is associated with their top-notch music school. If your D is a classical singer who wants fewer gen eds then I too would recommend ditching Pace, which has a reputation of being focused on contemporary and “edgy” and also is a 60 credit BFA as opposed to some of the more conservatory-style programs like Montclair which is a 90+ credit BFA (and no math!).

^ I agree, especially if your d considers herself an actor first. It sounds like last year Pace even told a lot of the students to skip their monologue at auditions!

My other school tied for first is Shenandoah Conservatory. As I live close-ish to it I’ve been able to visit several times and talk with so many students that I could definitely see myself there. Also I’m going to jump on the ditching-Pace train, I know a girl going there and another girl who almost went there and they both have very edgy and modern styles.

I know a girl going to Pace, and she’s an incredible actor. That and reading their web site audition guidelines make me think that acting is a big focus there. Maybe not straight acting so much, but acting in terms of MT? Skipping monologues might not mean much if they are more interested in how you act the song.

Oh, yes, dramamama0804, I anticipate that d will audition for up to 15 schools. That already is a lot; I can imagine the stress and cost of the applications, including essays, scheduling, and auditioning process is pretty high! I hope to try to help her make it as fun and positive as possible, no matter how many places she applies.

GSOMT, that’s a good idea–one that I had in mind when I said I probably should have her visit a few. D says that she doesn’t care much about all of that; she’s focused on training, but that should probably dictate which schools we visit.

FutureMillie, the Stages suggestion is a great one; thanks.

I thought I’d read that Coastal didn’t take everyone to showcase, so it was almost off her list. Now, it’s back on since 2 people here have indicated they do. Plus, austinmtmom’s review was great!

Calliene, thanks so much for your kind offer! If we go there, I’ll take you up on it!

Pace is officially off the list. Whew! One down! Actually, probably 2 down, as she doesn’t like the idea of having a grad student as a voice instructor for 2 years and would prefer the same instructor for all years. (She’ll overlook this at UMich and CCM.) So, Florida is most likely out. Darn. I love vacationing down there!

I saw Otterbein on your list and their showcase is also auditioned, I believe. I’m kind of confused about how it works with Acting versus MT there…because in their showcase photos from last year there are 8 in NY and 4 in LA…and I know there are 8 people in the MT program. Are there 4 acting?

Re: Otterbein, I asked my son about showcase auditions and it’s his impression that only rarely is someone not sent to the showcase. Kids do choose between NYC and LA (they can also now choose between those cities for their senior internship). Re: numbers, in the last two classes there have only been 4 acting students total (4 per year, that is); my son told me that for the current class, they had far fewer on the wait list than in years past–only 32 total, including the 16 accepted in the first round and those waitlisted. The current freshman class has 13 performance majors, I believe (both acting and MT).

Bear in mind that my son’s only a first-semester freshman and might not be 100% accurate in terms of facts and figures, but I’m trying to pass along whatever seems helpful. :)

That is good to hear re: Otterbein. Thank you! It had been high on d’s list (and, also, “mine,” as we live somewhat near  ), so I think she would’ve auditioned and applied there, anyway, but with reservations about that. However, that information keeps it on the list for sure now.

^Based on what you’ve said about your daughter’s criteria, Otterbein could be a great fit for her. Please feel free to PM me (once you have enough posts!) if you and your daughter have specific questions. It was such a pleasure to see my son over Thanksgiving break and hear him talk about school–he’s thriving there. It’s both nurturing and challenging, and there’s a very close-knit community among the students and faculty.

I understand that BoCo seems to have a reputation for not offering as much financial assistance as other schools. However, I would not let this stop you from considering it. My son is a freshman there, and he has a close friend who is on a full-ride scholarship, and I believe it is talent-based, given the professions of his parents. At parent’s weekend, it was clear many students had received financial aid and were on work study. I wouldn’t eliminate options too early.

Hi myloves! My D is a freshman at Roosevelt/CCPA in the BFA MT Voice Emphasis program. If you have any specific questions that aren’t answered over on the Roosevelt musical theatre schools forum, please feel free to send me a PM! She loves it there!

Echoing what Times3 said above. As I was reading your list I thought that Otterbein would be a good fit. (My girl is a sophomore MT) Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

One suggestion . . . get the course list for each program and compare each year of the program at each school. It will give you all an idea of the performance-based coursework. Maybe I should start a thread where people can post that info? I’ll see if I can find Otterbein’s.
