Would you rate my ECs as weak or mediocre/average?

Hi, I was just wondering how my ECs were looking, as I’m a senior in high school and will be apply to colleges very soon. I also realize that there may not be much I can do now regarding these, especially since I’m planning to apply early action to most of my target and reach schools.

-Inducted into National Honor Society this past May (so I will be a member during the 2018-2019 school year)

-Treasurer of school’s French Club during junior year and continuing in senior year

-President of school’s Humanities and Social Sciences club during junior year and continuing in senior year

-Tutor at school’s Writing Center during junior year, continuing in senior year

-Science Olympiad team since freshman year, JV during sophomore/junior year, and will probably move to varsity senior year (Received 2nd place medal in Regionals during sophomore year and 2nd place and 3rd place medal in junior year)

-Piano for about 6-7 years, mentored younger students last summer

-Volunteer at a local hospital from Sept 2017-Aug 2018

-Key Club Member during freshman and junior year (100+ volunteer hours)

-Model United Nations member during sophomore year

I can’t think of anything else right now but if I do later, I’ll just add it on. Thanks:)

I think you’re in good shape, but it depends on the selectivity of the colleges you are targeting. I’d leave off activities you only did for one year (or at least move them down the list. Keep in mind that NHS is a minimum bar for highly selective and very selective schools - list it, but not at the top (or move it to the honors/awards category rather than considering it a full EC. Your board positions, tutoring, and volunteering show leadership and character. Those help you.

I can’t tell from your EC’s what your area of study might be. That is perfectly fine for most colleges, but some top colleges want to see some passion. Although I don’t see yours, there are ways you can tie it all together, either through your essay or by discussing how these activities helped you to develop certain character traits that you value and help you to be successful in reaching your goals.

Groundwork2022, thank you for the feedback! As of now, I’m planning on applying to UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, UNC Charlotte, Eastern Carolina, Appalachian State, WashU, and UVA, and I want to study biology. I’m hoping that Science Olympiad might show my general interest in science, along with my classes (APES, AP Chem, AP Bio). I also didn’t mention that I’m taking the SAT Biology test pretty soon as well. Thanks again for the advice, it was really helpful and now I have a better idea of how to write about my ECs
