Would you recommend UMich Learning Community? Are they selective?

I’m an engineering student trying to avoid living on North campus and think that a learning community may be right for me. I know I have to apply for one - are they selective? Is it hard to “get in”? Should/Can I apply for more than one MLC?

I believe that is a good way to not be assigned to North Campus. My daughter was in WISE this past year. Next year she is going to do the German living community.

A lot of the learning communities are selective. Take the application seriously. You will be heavily evaluated on your essay(s)/specific LLC application components and your personal background (including diversity attributes).

Taking a stab here, so it may not be perfect:

Total FT Freshman: 6,664
98% live on campus: 6,531

Baits II: 570
Northwood III: 547
Bursley: 1,300

Estimated Freshman Housing on North Campus: 2,417

Roughly 37% of the freshman housing is located on North Campus, which means you would have a 63% chance of being housed on Central or The Hill, which can be increased or decreased subject to your room preferences on your housing application.

Just in case you choose not to do an MLC.

@yikesyikesyikes is it possible to apply to more than 1 MLC?

I believe that you can apply to more than one theme community but only one learning community.

2 themed communities https://housing.umich.edu/themes-mlcs/

Think only one living https://lsa.umich.edu/mlc/prospective-students.html

Doesn’t everyone seem to be having fun?

Daughter was in WISE her freshmen year, and was very happy with the experience, including the opportunity to live in Mosher-Jordan (“MoJo”) which is a great dorm. It is competitive but not impossible. I think the program looks closely at the essays and overall genuineness of the application/ interest in the learning community.

@xygate487

You used to apply to up to two (with a ranked preference) - might just be one now - you can see on the housing application yourself.

Applying for a learning community is a good way for you to try and guarantee housing in a specific dorm. Some communities are more selective than others, but most important is that you apply to communities actually of interest to you, as you will be living with community peers and will likely have to participate in community classes/ groups.
