My favorites of Beethoven are Egmont Overture and Symphony No.9... what about you?

My favorites would have to be Moonlight sonata, Appassionata, 9th symphony, and of course, the 5th symphony.

the only metal band i like is opeth, but friends inform me that they arent even really metal, theyre "progressive"...oh well....

Opeth is metal. There's no question about it. Are your friends tr00 kvlt grym frostbitten metalheads who automatically disown any band they like that becomes popular? I can understand why many don't consider Opeth death metal, but not even metal? Come on. I mean seriously

what's your favorite opeth album by the way?

also, if you like opeth there's a good chance you'll like a bunch of other progressive metal bands in a similar vein... give agalloch, maudlin of the well, meshuggah, and pain of salvation a listen

But Bach destroys Beethoven. When was the last time Beethoven improvised a eight-voice fugue? Yeah, I didn't think so...

All alternative rock blows and is for metal-wannabes.

Dragonforce blows, and I bet the people here who say they are awesome have never heard an album of theirs other than Inhuman rampage.

Megadeth is/was/always will be Metallica's little brother who can never be as good.

Death Magnetic was 80's quality instrumentals + better vocals.

Metallica is the best metal band of all time.

Opeth owns.

everyone, pleeeease stop namedropping bands that have no absolutely relevance to this thread

actually, stop namedropping in general. no one is impressed

"everyone, pleeeease stop namedropping bands that have no absolutely relevance to this thread

actually, stop namedropping in general. no one is impressed"

Because the talent it takes to name a couple of bands you like is incalculable. If only you had my skills then maybe people would be impressed by you too...

Either that or we like meeting people with similar music tastes because music is fun to talk about.

Pick your poison.

yeah, but the problem is no one is actually discussing about music or the topic and instead people are barging into this thread and going "hey guys, look at what music I listen to!" without any thought of contributing to discussion

"yeah, but the problem is no one is actually discussing about music or the topic and instead people are barging into this thread and going "hey guys, look at what music I listen to!" without any thought of contributing to discussion"

Well, the topic didn't provide much discussion in the first place. By the third post, this thread was already off-topic. And your criticism of other posts is off-topic in itself.

Well, I guess you (the op) can at least take solace in ACDC's new album being listenable.

Chinese Democracy is crap, I think everyone agrees

ACDC's new album is barely listenable, i think its worse than CD and DM, although all three are passable, but meh.

Opeth is progressive death metal, and while i associate prog metal with ******baggery like Dream Theater, I do like Opeth. And Tool is okay, the best of the "I wish I was pink floyd" metalloid bands.

And Axl, while the epitome of ******baggery, is still... Axl. My older brother says the best explanation is that when that redhead came on MTV screaming WTTJ in 87, he was immortalized. Izzy Stradlin was the real cohesion in GnR as far as I can tell in terms of melding Axl's once-epic vocal talent with a monster of a guitarist. Which is why VR has some nice licks, but nothing that I am inclined to listen to one every few days.

And last of all, raise your hand if you wish it had been Lars instead of bass-god Cliff in 86 on that damn bus. Imagine.

Ahahahah word. Cliff was a good man. :[

And I respectfully disagree with you about DT. While they do wank all the time and are laughably pretentious, they're one of my favorite bands of all time. They got me into music that requires actual TALENT, ya know? And sometimes their *****baggy solos are just... *good.

But I'm glad everyone in here agrees that Opeth is good. Mikael Akerfeldt is a damn genius. I can die happy now that I've seen them. (Progressive Nation Tour: 3, Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, and Dream Theater. Best concert of my life?! Yesss.)

"They got me into music that requires actual TALENT, ya know? And sometimes their ******baggy solos are just... good."

Listening to Dream Theater requires talent in itself. Ditto Axl Rose.

And Lars Ulrich is an EPIC prick.

When I want epic cheesiness, I go to Wisconsin. Not listen to labrie.

I do have respect for Petrucci, but seriously, a band isn't about the individual skill of each player. Their instrumentals are technically good, but an attempt to imitate good prog bands that had meaning and actual emotion behind their sounds (okay, and a bit of acid too).

And there is the fact that Dream Theater's cult is just annoying. I have more respect for Dragonforce because they seem to be aware of the fact that they are a B level band and they go about producing music knowing that it is a joke, better than crappy pop and alternative.

If Dream theater would just show that they are aware of the fact that they are tools, I would respect them as a band. Because that's what they are, Petrucci can finger-noodle, I do like the keyboardist, labrie is ugh, and the drummer is average. And they have nothing to say, no message, no fuel. It's just let me wank around with my instrument and attach strange lyrics that I can pretend mean something, but actually don't.

And then there is the fact that they claim to be proggers, but they are combining metal with a type of rock that went out of style in the 70s-80s.. they aren't pushing any musical bounds, which is what prog is about.

The thing is, I don't think the members of Dream Theater take themselves NEARLY as seriously as their fans do. Like, okayyy, they do all those cryptic "nugget" things and all, which is really pretentious, but that's just for fun.

I mean, I went to a show, and in 'Fatal Tragedy,' instead of being all, "Without faith / without hope / there can be no peace of mind" LaBrie sang "Without faith / without hope / you can eat my ass and balls" AHAHAH and I just died laughing! This one guy near me was SOOOOOOOOoooooo excited about DT that he was like jumping around (it was a seated venue lol) and I was just thinking "omggg he takes this band more seriously than they take themselves!!!"

I dunno... I'd still consider them the pioneers of prog metal. I mean, a band that is the epitome of a certain genre doesn't necessarily have to be doing something new and original! Was Nirvana the first grunge band? Were the Clash and the Ramones the first punk bands? Nawww but they're the ones who popularized their respective types of music and, whether or not you have respect for the genres or the bands themselves, you gotta give them credit for bringing these genres to the mainstream.

indeed, you have a point. They did brainwash... ahem, gain a lot of fans. And they are a successful act, so to each his own

lets see, i like blackwater park and ghost reveries. and yeah, my friends are kind of intense about their metal...and music- thanks for the suggestions, backslash

btw, anyone watch metalocalypse? i dont get half the jokes, but its still fun :)
