WPI Class of 2023 Hopeful Thread!

My son submitted his app way back in mid-Oct and we’ve heard nothing yet. I was hoping they had rolling admissions and would notify sooner but…oh well.

@edumax: He won’t hear any decision until the EA1 decisions are all released at the same time… on December 20. My daughter is a happy camper there. Best of luck to your son!

Thank you @cameo43!! We got to visit for Fall Open House and it seemed like a great fit for our son…besides the weather…lol. We are from South Texas.

Do you all think that decisions this year will be Monday, December 17? Last year, wasn’t it a Monday at 5pm?

Yes it was Monday last year if I recall correctly.

FWIW regarding earlier posts, I went to RPI and WPI and they are very different schools. I also recruit at both colleges and both produce solid engineers.

Thanks for starting this thread. My son applied to WPI early action back in October. He also applied early action to Purdue. He applied regular decision to Uconn, RPI, RIT, Stevens, Syracuse, Union, UAH, KU, KSU (been accepted already to last 3). My understanding is that all WPI EA decisions are out by December 20. Going into the Nov. 1 deadline, WPI was Number 1 on my son’s list. He attended Frontiers there this summer and liked it. It’s close to us and has good rep for engineering. There is more for him at a school like WPI than at a liberal arts college, which was my dream for him up until a year ago when it was clear he’s not an LAC kid. We also recently attended RIT‘s open house and it was PHENOMENAL. I knew nothing about RIT except they had the program my son wanted. I really expected it to be kind of dodgy tbh. We had a great visit despite the fact that we had to drive through a blizzard to get there. While there, we also learned there’d been a suicide and a rather public one at that on Halloween which was only a week or so before we were there (November 10). I was able to speak with a few random students who weren’t part of the tour. They were very candid about there not being enough mental health counselors to serve the immense student body (about 16,000 UGs on Henrietta campus alone, +3K grad). Also heard stories about drugs and overdoses (RAs did virtual AMAs with us). This was jarring to hear but we also met terrific kids, saw amazing facilities, heard about great majors, great coops. Engineering House is like stepping into a video game by way of Dick Van Dyke’s house in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The more I research, the clearer it’s becoming that WPI may have edge in that it is smaller and while dorms not as snazzy and fewer newer buildings, WPI may have a better handle on how to treat kids once they get there. RPI? Where fun goes to die! We liked it but it was serious. No one is winging it there. Beautiful campus. KU – opens their admissions on July 1 and operates on the principal of assured acceptance. Everyone gets in. Maybe not everyone gets into engineering but almost. It’s not a bad mindset to send your kid into. KSU very similar but sounds more conservative. Both have great aero programs and Kansas now has a governor that isn’t crazy. Purdue is appealing bc of my son’s interest in space, their great aero/astro and Neil Armstrong. Good luck. Hope everyone gets what they want out of this sometimes ridiculous process.

@ctparent2019 just letting you know that KSU does have a very good program. NASA has some connections with them. It is not as conservative as it looks on the outside. S is a sophomore there and knows equal numbers of liberal and conservative students. He loves it there so if it does come down to looking there let us know! My S is OOS from a big town thinks it is a fantastic university.

Just for the record, WPI does have some very significant history with NASA and aeronautics starting with President Laurie Leshin.

Wow. Great to hear a shout out for KSU. I can’t get over how impressed we’ve been with what both KU and KSU have to offer. And everyone at both schools are so nice. I will keep this thread bookmarked to make sure I check in with you around March.

Thanks – Good reminder about WPI. I will visit those links. My son really likes WPI. He wants to study aero there but WPI also has some good research going on plasma physics, a topic that particularly interests him.

Welp, @WPIadmissions tweeted today that early action 1 decisions will be released December 20.

We are getting very excited for WPI to release admissions. Our daughter REALLY LOVED IT when she visited. Had a great off-site interview, too. Good luck, everyone!!!

Is it the 20th yet?? ugh. This is taking forever.

@edumax wonder if WPI will release earlier than their published date? Like a holiday surprise? Would be nice!

Sure would be! Does anyone know whether merit scholarship awards are announced with an acceptance?

Merit, if offered, was included in the acceptance letter last year.

@jmk518, that’s great to know! Thanks!

Fill some time with these recent pictures and activities. As an elderly alumnus I was most interested in the research by Assistant Professor Olsen. They have not given up on the search for the fountain of youth!

Just saw on Twitter that ea decisions are now being released on 12/19. One day closer!
