D accepted, $25.5k per year Presidential scholarship. 93.3/100 1320 SAT all-American athlete with high leadership ECs. Legacy.
Based on the numbers reported here the scholarships for women do not seem as high as they were last year which ranged from $31k for top NON-URM to $37k for the top URM. So maybe as WPI approaches its target demographic it is shifting the scholarship balance back slightly.
Wow, some great SAT scores accepted. My son was deferred to for Comp Sci. 1370 SAT, 95 weighted GPA, lots of AP/Honors classes. He is bummed as WPI rose to his top choice but has one good accept already so not sweating it too bad. We will cross our fingers for RD.
@RightCoaster, thank you. I can appreciate that WPI is working to achieve a balanced student body. Itâs frustrating, though, that DS has focused on schools that award merit since on paper we donât demonstrate much need. Now it seems that there arenât many financial safety schools available to him. I was hopeful that WPI would be the trifecta of academic, athletic, and financial fit.

Pretty surprised with the aid I ended up getting
Hope to see some of you there!
D got accepted with $30K ; she was already going to WPI for one year as part of her school. âFortunatelyâ she got an ED from her first choice school with no scholarship ! So, she cannot accept WPI.
Apparently, the company that WPI outsourced last year to determine financial/merit aid allocated more money to students than WPI typically had done in the past (according to a post on the WPI parents FB page) resulting in more students accepting offers and yielding their largest class ever. This is probably not sustainable. I would expect offers to be more modest and in line with previous years, if this was really the case.
You might want to take observations from a FB page with a bag of salt. It might not be more than pure conjecture. Return rates do change. Reasons are not always understood. FA is one, but not the only variable impacting return rate.
@waitpast12
Did WPI restrict admission to an ME major? In the past, accepted students were not restricted by major.
@RabbiBeth
Congradulations to your daughter!
If your daughter elects to take an overseas project study at WPI she has an automatic $5000 credit so the experience should not entail an additional cost. If you have not already done so check out the project center map @ https://maps.wpi.edu/?id=657#!ct/11047,11046,11045,11044,11042,7435,7434,0,11064,11062,11054,35899,11944,11943,11067,11066,11053,35897,11068,11050,31731,31730,31729,31728,31727,31726,31723,27865,11876,11065,11059,11058,11051,11049,11048,35896,35895,35894,11945,11070,11063,11061,11060,11056,11055,11043
@retiredfarmer WOW, thanks for this helpful message! Appreciate it. Daughter is VERY interested in doing overseas work if and when she attends WPI. That is exciting - thanks again!!!
Please donât make the meal plans higher than they are. I saw 6.33K, but they also list one at 7.4K. See https://www.wpi.edu/offices/bursar/tuition, After freshman year I lived in a shared student apartment and learned how to cook. It took awhile for us to learn to wash dishes. The training served me well as a surviving retiree who just had friends over for a holiday dinner! The apartment was 500â off campus and is still there.
Your son has demonstrated that he is an excellent student. The last matriculating class had an average unweighted GPA of 3.86. WPI is also a âtest optionalâ university which means that good scores are helpful if submitted, but GPA tends to carry more weight. He was deferred and not rejected. I would make sure that they know his HS does not offer AP courses. AP courses are not required and he would need a 4 or 5 on the AP exam to receive credit at WPI anyway.
Has he had an interview?
Thank you for your reply, retiredfarmer, your comments are very helpful. DS did a campus visit during his junior year, but has not had an interview. I will recommend to DS to contact admissions after winter break and see if he can get an interview scheduled. He did include a note on application that his school does not offer AP classes.
WPI is really good at looking at the student holistically. They wonât expect him to have taken classes not offered. If you are concerned? Iâd talk to admissions about it to ease your mind. For what it is worth? Iâm an alumni, my son is a Freshman. He didnât get in to Berkeley which was where I was hoping because we live in the Bay Area. He came home for winter break and told me that heâs so happy there (I grew up in Worcester, so I had to laugh, really??) There is so much more freedom to take classes which interest him, the plan has evolved in to the vision they had in the 80s when I was there. I told him I wish I was there now. Itâs thriving.
@LoisLane100 Ralphâs Chadwick Square Diner = happiness when in Worcester!
