Wright State Talk 2015

Hey guys I’m thinking about adding wright state to my list. I never really considered it since I like city environments like CCM and Roosevelt or near a city like Montclair but Dayton seems alright and the program seems wonderful, along with the tuition.

Anyway, I haven’t applied to the school yet but am I still able to send in a presidential through acceptd and hear if I pass that before moving foreword. And also does wright state attend Chicago unifieds?

Wright State has never attended unifieds in the past. Don’t think things have changed for this year. I’m not sure if you meant “prescreen” above?? If so, prescreen submissions are optional for WSU - basically meant to save students and their families the time and expense of coming to an audition if they are not even close to what WSU is looking for. You can schedule an audition w/o submitting a prescreen. There is, however, an audition and scholarship form that needs to be filled out and sent in. WSU’s Dance, Theater and Motion Pictures program is pretty laid back and I think the audition application is still sent in via snail mail.

WSU’s campus is pretty nice. The Creative Arts Center is currently undergoing major renovation/addition and should be finished some tim next year. My S finds that he is way too busy to do much off-campus. That said, the students do find ways to get to performances and other activities in Dayton. Some students find theater gigs in Columbus and Cincinnati as well. Both are only an hour away by car.

I did mean prescreen, autocorrect isn’t up to date on Musical a Theatre BFA lingo yet.
I knew it was optional but I figure it’s a smart thing to do to potentially save time and money if they know they aren’t interested in me. However nfortunately I think it would be quite tough if they didn’t do unified or any other regional auditions as I don’t have enough money to travel to campuses to audition.

@ParachuteBoy - Sounds like doing a prescreen would be a good option for you. If you “pass” the prescreen, don’t let finances be an automatic “no way” for your audition. Contact the department. Perhaps something can be worked out. If the financial burden is a true roadblock, perhaps a video audition could be worked out. Or maybe you can do an overnight in the student dorm. WSU has one of the friendliest departments we ran into during S’s audition year. Maybe they have a plan in place for circumstances like yours. Good Luck.

Thank you for the help! It definitely wasn’t an immediate deal breaker and I’m sure I’m not the only one who is in this situation. The only travel I can do for auditions is for unifieds so I get a lot of schools in one, it really is handy. I don’t know if sending in a video audition will decrease my chances over the on campus people but it’s worth a shot. I’ll defiantly email their admissions, glad to hear their helpful.

Chicago was stunning - visually, musically, dramatically. Is it possible these are “just” college kids? And they are SO lucky to have Scot Woolley and his band providing the beats. It doesn’t get any better.

Ditto! Incredible!!!

We arrive this Friday for master class. Auditions Saturday morning then Chicago Saturday night. Cannot wait!

My S really enjoyed the masterclass. He did it twice - once as a junior and again when he auditioned as a senior. He got a really good impression of the faculty and his admiration for them has only gotten stronger after 1 1/2 years as a student. Due to his commitment to Chicago performances, I doubt my S will be at the auditions, but I’m sure your S will enjoy himself. You’re seeing the third weekend of Chicago, so you should be seeing a really tight show. As “Dad of Auditionee”, you can sit back, relax and just take in “all that jazz”. At least, TRY to. . .

Just talked to my D - she said the Master Class is during her class time, so she will be there, and she is working auditions on Saturday.

@EmTeeDad2016 - BAL to your S tomorrow and Saturday at WSU. Try to enjoy the start of this wild journey with your S.

Chicago was absolutely amazing! We had a backstage tour and the detail on some of the set pieces/props were absolutely amazing. The talent on and offstage combined for a very entertaining show. To all those who will be there closing weekend, enjoy! Hope those auditioning have a great experience.

On the road to Dayton!

Beautiful day to be on a windy campus. Check out the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base if you don’t want to hang around all day.

Most assuredly windy! Hanging out in the student union getting a feel for the vibe. Lunch with local friends soon.

Dayton is ALWAYS windy! Tell your S to break a leg tomorrow! After the audition, if you aren’t headed straight home, yes to the air museum - also, Yellow Springs is a cute artsy area with lots of restaurants and shops that is fun to visit, as well as the Oregon District downtown. We ate at Lily’s Bistro a couple of weeks ago when we were there - food was wonderful!

Home finally. Audition went well he thinks. Chicago was simply amazing. Really enjoyed wandering around campus and getting a better feel for the school. Now let the waiting begin…

@EmTeeDad2016 We were there, too. Super-exciting first audition,… and super scary. My head is full of mathematics this weekend. If 50 kids auditioned this weekend, and there are x more audition days, that makes x auditionees. If the top 12 accept top school A, then the next 12 accept top school B, and the next 12 accept top school C, does that leave my kid anywhere in the picture for WSU? I’m a firm believer that, at a certain level (no naselly twangs, no patchy pitch), the panel cannot judge talent and are choosing kids based on such factors as “likeability” and “fit”, so how does my kid figure in that entirely unmeasurable scenario. Geez, I have several more months with much too much time on my hands to ponder the math of it all. Wish I was a “glass-half-full” kind of a person. Where’s the Xanex? Lot of fun on the trip, though, and kid now loves WSU. Wish the head of department had been there instead of taking a sick day, but there I go with my glass-half-empty again.

That’s the nature of the business our kids have chosen. They could be the most talented but if they need a tall brunette boy and S is a short blonde boy, it doesn’t matter.

The part of the equation you are leaving out are the people that are auditioning at schools B and C. Like one of the girls said, you will end up where you belong.

Best of luck to your D or S. I was much more nervous beforehand but I’m at ease now. I can’t control it so no need to worry.

@EmTeeDad2016, Wasn’t that a great experience for the kids to have the masterclass the day before auditioning? I wonder why more schools don’t do that…lack of time and too many applicants, I suppose. I have to believe that WSU gets those great kids we saw in Chicago by going beyond the 4 minute audition experience and actually seeing who the kids are for a day. So glad we did the masterclass. I read a lot of this “You end up where you belong” stuff and hope it’s true. But the skeptic in me worries that my kid will be the one who has to alter courses or take a gap year to brush up on skills. A lot of my kid’s friends already know where they are going to college, and I’m concerned for him that college is an “if”, not a “when”, depending on audition outcomes. I keep harping back to “but all we want is an education and a chance to train,” but worry that my kid will not make the grade. We think we have a couple of “safeties” but the level of competition–even for an education–makes everything so uncertain. Wish my kid would choose engineering instead…
