Hey what do yall think would be the best college for a potential writer? I know that for most of the best writers out there, this didnt really matter-- even getting a post high school education didnt matter, but does anyone know what schools have a strong english or journalism program or something? also how many of yall are aspiring authors too?

Here are some suggestions.

For creative writing and very strong English programs: Kenyon, Bennington, Bard, Beloit, Knox, Iowa, Hamilton, SUNY New Paltz, U of Pittsburgh, Oberlin, Sarah Lawrence

For Journalism: Syracuse, Northwestern, USC, Boston U, Emerson, Ithaca College

Ditto Carolyn, but for journalism, U of Missouri -- the first & still the best J-school. For writing, add Middlebury to the list.

I'm surprised Johns Hopkins hasn't been mentioned. It has an exceptionally strong creative writing program.

If you're interested in creative writing, make sure you investigate how difficult it is to get into the creative writing classes at any college you consider. There are places with great instructors, but the competition to get in is so fierce that you might never get a chance.

If you're interested in journalism, the key is the campus newspaper. But many people who want "to write" do not really consider that journalism is much more involved with information gathering than writing style -- ability to approach strangers, ask good questions, think quickly on your feet, be able to boil complicated material down, write under pressure, etc.

For writing in general, the best thing you can do is a ton of reading.
