Writing 20

I had a couple questions about Writing 20. First of all are you really taught (by the teacher) about the subject that you will write about (crime, globalization, etc) or is the main thing you learn how to write essays or papers properly? Does anyone know if the "Time Travels" class is actually about time travel or it is just about writing about the past, present and future or something along those lines? For people that have already taken Writing 20, what would you recommend or which class did you choose and what did you think about it? What did you like or dislike about the class?

My writing 20 class was focused on learning how to write. Most of the classes were just doing small group tasks or discussing each others’ papers as a group. The professor also would talk about techniques, but it was mostly basic. There wasn’t too much work but I don’t think I learned that much from it. You learn some things about the specific subject material (such as crime or globalization) through researching it for the papers, but you aren’t lectured to or tested about specific facts.

As someone who took “Time Travels” last semester, I can tell you that the primary focus of the course is to give you the foundation for academic writing. That being said, you will write several essays throughout the semester, and work with your classmates in peer revisions of those essays. While the topic of “Time Travels” made for great discussion in class, and provided excellent topics for writing both analytical and research papers, learning the topic is not as important as the actual writing skills you will develop.
