Writing About a Friend with a Mental Illness?

<p>I know you generally should avoid writing about personally going through a mental illness but what about writing about helping a friend through her mental illness?</p>

<p>Watching someone close to me being destroyed by her illness has really impacted me while choosing my major. Would it be appropriate to write about this or would admission officers still be wary about accepting me? </p>

<p>Are you essentially describing how you discovered your major/ calling? If so, and the essay is about your actions and decisions, then it sounds like a good topic, imho.</p>
