I have experienced depression for 4 years and I think that the way I overcame it has shaped me as a person. I want to write my essay about how my exposure to musical composition, piano performance, and cognitive neuroscience (psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience etc.) allowed me to overcome my depression by taking measures to improve my situation.
Would it be harmful to write about this topic in my college essay?
I think colleges know that true depression often returns repeatedly throughout someone’s life. They’d rather not bring students on campus that they know have a history of depression. The college essay prompts don’t need to be taken that literally – you don’t need to expose your truest/deepest secrets to them. Think of it as showing them a side of yourself that will make them want you on campus. That topic probably doesn’t accomplish that.
