I am writing an essay for a scholarship about a community service project that I started and run every year. It has grown to be quite large and I will write the essay about it, but I do not want to sound boastful. Does anyone have any tips on how to ensure they understand the gravity of the work I have done without myself sounding pretentious or arrogant, two traits I would loathe to be considered by anyone( let alone a judge)?
Emphasize your passion for the people/cause you are serving and the scope of the problem. Use concrete numbers to describe the scale of your involvement. But sounding pretentious is always something that is difficult to combat on college essays. I would seek the opinions of multiple adults to get the balance between arrogance and extreme modesty just right.
I would work on the essay using a “show” method of writing. Instead of saying “I’m so reliable” say “Each day I arrived on time.” Just a minor example - since so … many…kids and adults can’t manage to do that
