It appears that either Jane or Marek will be elected (to be presidents) of the student union.
A) to be presidents
B) as presidents
C) presidents
D) for president
E) president

A, B, C is wrong because "presidents" is plural while either...or... makes the subject "Jane" and "Marek" singular.

The Answer: E

What makes D wrong? It is some idiom rule?

elected ‘as the president’ would be okay.
elected ‘for president’ doesn’t sound okay. Must be idiom, not sure.

Maybe a little more clarification would be nice…

For president is redundant. The question already says they will be elected for the student union so “for president of the” is a bit redundant. I’m not sure what grammar rule can be applied to this question but most of these questions are sound tests. E sounds better than D.
