Here's a writing question I don't understand:

The fierce competition for grades among premed students (is because of wanting to be accepted by a top medical school).

a. (default)
b. is because of a desire to be accepted by a top medical school
c. stems out of wanting to be accepted by a top medical school
d. stems from the desire for acceptance by a top medical school
e. is because of the desire for acceptance at a top medical school

The answer is D and their explanation is, "The original sentence is both informal and redundant. By substituting stems from the desire for is because of wanting, you create a stronger, more effective sentence.

I understand why the default wording for the sentence is wrong, but I do not understand why the answer is D and/or why the other answers are wrong.

Thanks.
