I wrote 2 essays for 2 diff. prompts for my UF essay but I don’t know which to use. Just give me your honest personal opinion on which sounds better.
Prompt 1: You have been elected President of the United States. Write your inauguration speech for us.
My essay: Very broad, presidential-sounding (appropriately), had a feeling of “looking ahead” instead of reflecting on myself. I made it unique to me by weaving my own personal values into the speech. I even mentioned being gay, saying that I was the first gay president. Creative but maybe risky. Slightly cliche because all presidential speeches have that hint of “America is great, the future is bright, cliche cliche cliche!” Not very focused on myself as a high school student.
Prompt 2: Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective.” Describe a time when your perspective changed. How did your perspective change and why did it change?
My essay: Focused on my perspective regarding what kind of volunteer work is considered “impressive.” I wrote about doubting the merits of being a little league concessions worker, and how my teacher made me realize that I had done work that was worthy of pride, even if it was less sophisticated than the work of my peers. Much more focused on me as a high school student than the other essay. Smaller scale, includes actual moments from my life, instead of being as general as the presidential essay. Possibly boring because it talks about volunteering, which is already mentioned in my resume.
Thanks a ton.
