I am an international student from China and I recently got accepeted by both Vanderbilt and WUSTL. My intended major is Biomedical Engineering, and I want to choose which school to attend. Could you please give me some suggestions based on academics, environment, dining, housing on campus, attitudes toward international students, extracurriculars, etc? Thank you very much!!!

Congrats on your acceptance to two great schoolS! I believe WashU has a top notch biomedical engineering program and is generally more reputed than Vanderbilt for biology and biomedical engineering. Also, you should know that WashU has one of the most friendliest students bodies, so as international, it’s really not hard to settle down. Food and Housing are among the top 5 in the nation! The dorms are WONDERFUL (princeton review rankings). I think you’ll really fit in well at WashU!

Come to WashU!

I personally do think that it is going to be an easy decision. Definitely Washu!
Vanderbilt is a good school, too. No quation about it!. However, Washu has better reputation and Washu has a lot more friendly environment for international, especially Asian student. BME at Washu is a top notch program as Happyasever said. I am an Asian American and I feel a lot more comfortable at Washu. I visited Vonderbilt a few years ago. It is a good school, but Washu was definitely my choice. I am so happy at WashU.

You would have to look up the exact numbers, but I expect that WashU has a much larger Asian population and International population than Vanderbilt. WashU has a collaboration with Fudan University in China, and hence is probably better known there.

I would expect a Chinese international student to feel more comfortable with the WashU student culture than the Vanderbilt student culture. Vanderbilt has more of a US southern feel, with a greater emphasis on fraternities and sororities and sports, that I’m assuming would feel less comfortable to the typical international student.

There are a number of websites where you can read student reviews about the schools. I suggest reading them for both schools.

WUSTL - they have a top notch BME program. Vandy is also a great school but with a lower %age of Asians, but the only way to get the true feel is to visit each campus while classes are in session.
