Xiggi's SAT prep advice

People don't bother posting their scores repeatedly because it's not relevent. Most people have posted their scores at least once - if you really want to find them, search through old threads

If someone is giving advise on how to score high on the SAT, I would assume they would be comfortable sharing their scores and performed well.

Since many people have asked regarding the scores, it's obvious others are interested in the scores and have not seen them. If advisors are not comfortable sharing their scores...all they have to do is say so. Though I would have to wonder if they are giving advise, why they would not be comfortable sharing how they did - even if they ballpark it.

I dont think searching through a bunch of old threads is the best way to find someones scores..ie what if they never shared them.

Xiggi, or any other SAT expert:

how, exactly, do you guys tackle passage reading? do you eg, skim? read carefully? etc

thanks, i'm really struggling with this aspect

wow people here really hate kaplan and pr, don't they? well kaplan has risen my marks from 640/640/630 M/R/W to 750ish/700/700

its definately not enough to give you 800's, but pretty generic stuff to raise marks to about the 700 level.

I'm not really an expert (rising junior, missed five freaken questions in a practice exam this morning), but I usually skim. Underline the first two and last sentences of the first paragraph. Then the first and last sentences of each subsequent paragraph. For the rest of the passage, just skim. . .you really don't even have to look at the rest, since most of the questions are so specific that they give you the line numbers.
Oh yeah. . .for all of you awesome people who got high scores, I have been SAT prepping for two years, and I still can't get 800's. . .I can't seem to get rid of the one or two mistakes per section. . .usually these are questions where you have to "infer" things from the passage. For the writing section, the situation is the same, only the type of questions I miss are the ones that you have to depend on your "ear". I am going to take the PSAT / SAT next October / November, so do you guys have any suggestions of what I can do to get rid of these mistakes? I am shooting for the 240 / 2400 Should I just push on and do more problems? Or do you think buying Grammatix will be worth it? Or is there some grammar book I can read?

Thanks a bunch!!

Joe,

Are these scores from the Kaplan diagnostics? If so, I would not trust them! Their exams are notoriously easier than the real thing.

the tests are o.k. i think the math is more or less the same difficulty. not sure about other two tho. keep in mind the course was updated from that atrocious book they released in july 2004

You are joking yourself if you are shooting for a perfect score. The most anyone can "shoot" for would be a 2300 because the rest all depends on luck. Also Kaplan's materials are still bad to this day, they always have been. Just use the CB Book.

well i'm done using kaplan's stuff anyways haha. i'm now concentrating on CB book & site. I'm shooting for somewhere around 2250.

Harvard_Genius, I disagree. I know of someone who "shot" for a 2400 and sure enough, reached it. For math, one only needs to learn the concepts and a perfect score is easily attainable. For writing, like math, one needs to learn the types of errors that show up on each test. The essay, with enough practice, shouldn't be a problem. Critical reading, arguably the toughest section, is all about reasoning. If you know how to approach the problems, it too should not be a problem.

That said, the actual process of going about doing this is incredibly difficult. However, if someone actually mastered it, then "shooting" for a 2400 is not a joke.

Yes I know all that...
With complete mastery and dominance of the SAT shooting for a 2350 even say a 2370 isnt a joke. However say your are looking to get 100% on a 4 hour test is incredibly difficult. There is bound to be at least 1 anomaly on the test that makes you pick and choose and that depends on your luck.

The SAT is standardized, meaning there aren't any anomalies. All the questions are very predictable.

Technically they are, but perspectively they arent. I would love to see a 2400 scorer get it twice. I had a 1600 on the old SAT but I doubt I could have gotten that again (Now I can cause im in my 3rd year of college).

Harvard_Genius, sounds like you know quite a bit about the quality of prep books. Can you tell me what are some good ones at preparing for the SAT II: Math, Physics, and Biology? Thanks!

Harvard_Genius, sorry again to bother you. I have comb through several forums to find helpful tips. Many recommend books such as Grammatix, Test Masters, Gruber's, Max SAT, and Rocket Review. But what is distinct about each? For instance, I learnt that Grammatix is awesome at strategies and for CR. What about the others? So confused. Thanks!

Xiggi, I have been reading the messages you have posted here and I ordered grammatix book through their website. I paid for the online version and I added $10 for the printed version. However, it has been three weeks and I have not received the printed version. My efforts to contact the number listed on their website 904-699-7722 have been exaustive. The message box is always full. They don't reply to any of my e-mails either. If you can let me know if there is anyway I can get in touch with them and check on the status of my order I would really appreciate it.

Im not familiar with Rocket Review/Max SAT/Grubers... however I can tell you that Testmasters and Grammatix are amazing books. To get a 2400 on the SAT the only books you need are the CB Book for real test questions, testmasters explanation book because the explanations are very indepth, and the grammatix book for strategy.

Harvard Genius, is the test master's explanation better than that of the college board online course?

Is there anyone out there who has used the CB Online course, the Testmasters solutions book and the Studyhall.com service or any combination of the three? We've had reviews of all three services, but I've never seen a comparison of any of the solution services

For those who bought the testmasters book, where did you buy it from? Amazon or the Testmasters website? Thanks.
