If I could toss some fairy dust and make you all get accepted, I’d do it. You’re a great group and Yale would be lucky to have all of you. I know I’d like to have you as friends! The best of luck to each and every one of us.

@litotes and @ealdi94 im in the same boat as you lol.
GOOD LUCK ALL

Yes. Truly good luck to each and every one of you.

Hey 2017!
D-Day is tomorrow, and I just finished a final exam, so I thought I’d stop by and give you all some hopefully reassuring/useful and not-condescending-sounding advice.

-Just click the damn button. It’s not like you’re going to be able to do anything else, anyway.

-Do not expect, however, that once you click the damn button, you will be able to see your admissions notification. Yale is notoriously bad at the internet! You will probably wait anywhere from 5-60 minutes before actually receiving a decision, because apparently years of experience with online notification does not prevent Yale & Co from not properly anticipating high site traffic.

-Most of you will get deferred. Some of you will get rejected. BOTH OF THESE THINGS ARE REALLY, REALLY, REALLY OK. Some quick success stories: I got deferred, and I got in. It does occasionally (if rarely, according to stats) happen! My friend got deferred, and then waitlisted (or rejected? can’t remember. doesn’t really matter), and is now attending and loving Princeton. My other friend got rejected EA and is currently kicking some major butt at UChicago! This is definitely not the end, and it doesn’t say anything about your self-worth or how “good” you are.

-Getting deferred does NOT mean a polite rejection. Yale takes the absolute strongest candidates on paper in the early round-- the ones they don’t want to fight with other colleges for. However, I know that on paper I wasn’t the strongest candidate. I was (and am) a normal kid with some pretty cool ideas. Did Yale still want me? Absolutely. Did they still think I could make an interesting and notable contribution to their community? Absolutely. Now that I’m here, do I feel inferior to people who got in early? Absolutely not.
The thing to remember in order to avoid feeling that way is (and this goes for all y’all who get in tomorrow, too) to FOCUS ON YOUR OWN *. At an elite college/uni (any elite college/uni, and also non-“elite” ones!) there are a ton of bright, sometimes (but often not) supergeniusbrilliant people. Lots of them are going to be better than you at physics, or better public speakers, or better at, uh, sports? or, i don’t know, better whistlers. Whatever it is, it probably doesn’t matter. What matters is that you do what you love, and what’s important to you, and EVEN IF there are people better than you at THAT, you don’t give a ***. You just keep doing you. Keep doing those things, and try new things, and just focus. on. yourself. You will end up wherever you do because YOU CAN DO GREAT THINGS. Don’t forget that. Oh, and also once in a while lift your head up and take a look at what amazing things the people around you are doing! That’s pretty great, too.

but let’s stop talking about the RD round right now. I know it’s not reassuring to many of you that, months from now, 2-6% of you will get into Yale (not sure what the exact numbers are on that one), and all of you will be going to college somewhere awesome. Let’s talk about what happens if you get rejected/deferred tomorrow.

-First of all, feel free to just scream or cry or cancel your appointments or go “***** YALE, THOSE SLIMY IDIOT TOADS” and then sacrifice a stuffed animal. Listen to angsty/angry songs. The “Once More, With Feeling” Buffy musical episode soundtrack and Mike Posner’s “Cooler than Me” were favorites of mine. I’m sure you have plenty of your own.

-Let yourself get a few days of space from other applications, but after those few days have elapsed, get your ass in gear again. You don’t want to be crying on New Year’s Eve because you still haven’t written half the supplements for your Brown application yet, or whatever. If you put RD stuff off, IT WILL SUCK. Guaranteed.

-Seriously, ***** Yale. It’s OK to hate/resent them! I did! Resent them for valuing 2400s and 4.0s and Olympic gold medalists and huge legacy donors more than your awesome brain (etc etc etc these are examples, if you actually are any of those things don’t be offended, you are awesome too! and probably resent other types of people, for whatever reason, too), because really, the college application system is *****ed up! And not everyone who deserves it can go to Yale et al, and that sucks MAJORLY. Resent them for being an elitist old boy institution with a really horrible football team (sorry, football team! but you do have a 5-year losing streak against harvard…). Resent them for Yale-NUS (personally, i think NUS is a bad thing; some people think it’s great, though). Resent them for everything they deserve to be resented for. Don’t let anyone stop you.

-Try to let go, though, after a while. Kind of try to forget this happened and just focus on the regular round and getting your **** done the best you can. And enjoy senior year!

-Don’t fault yourself. It’s not you, it’s Yale. You are so, so great. Trust me. Do, however, take this time to reevaluate weaknesses in your app, and self-reflect a little. Whatever happens, have some fun tomorrow! Go out for midnight ice cream with friends. Watch some TV by yourself while snuggling with a favorite pet. You deserve a break. Seriously.

I’m going to stop rambling now. GOOD LUCK 2017!!! All the hearts <3 <3 <3 can’t wait to see/meet some of you next year or at Bulldog Days!

So I’ll leave you guys until tomorrow post-5pm with a quote from my favorite Winnie the Pooh character (three guesses who that is).
“We can’t all, and some of us don’t. That’s all there is to it.”

Thanks ohreally. Advice much appreciated.

Damn, both Harvard SCEA applicants from my class just got accepted… and we have a really small class too, only about 80. Hoping that this bodes well for me tomorrow. We will just have to wait and see.

The stress is real. Luckily, I have a tootsie pop on my desk that will comfort me whether or not I am accepted. By the way, thanks for that post ohreally! It really helps.

It’s been great getting to know you all and having people who understand each other’s agony of waiting and aiming for a select view spots in these elite schools. In just this forum we have such a diverse group of individuals and that’s considering limited contact on this thread, our taste in music, and the subjects of our two essays. Hopefully many of us will meet each other at Yale, perhaps at other great universities!

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

See you all tomorrow evening!

If it were me in that room, the pop would not survive December 13th.

@ohreally as someone who was deferred from brown, your advice really made me feel better! thanks!

and to all of you yale EDers, good luck!

@Philovitist Believe me, it’s very tempting to just eat it now. It’s really a test of willpower.

@ litotes, ealdi, alocik
i’m in the same situation!
for my school, Yale Early Decisions are the first major Ivy decisions since no one applied to Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn, or Harvard early.

You all are truly amazing. From the brief time I’ve spent lurking on this forum and occasionally clicking the post button, I already know that every single one of you deserves a spot at Yale( Yes I’m clairvoyant). But truly, I wish you all the best! And maybe someday we just might meet each other in real life!:)

I know I’ll be frenetically pacing around school tommorrow, waiting for the clock to tick…WE’RE ALMOST THERE GUYS

I see what you did there.

But to all you EA applicants, know that what happens tomorrow doesn’t define your life or your personality or your existence. The fact that Yale gets way more applications from qualified students than it has spaces means that there’s subjectivity in the process.

And to me, that subjectivity comes down not to who can “build the best class” or who can “best utilize our resources.” Going through the process last year made me realize that these subjective decisions are, ultimately, made based on who the admissions officers feel will fit in best. Let’s face it: every school has its own vibe, its own personality (I definitely felt a lot different in Cambridge than I do here). And not everyone will fit in at any school. And that’s OK, because it’s so important to go to college–to spend 4 years of your life–somewhere where you feel like you belong.

So if you’re deferred or rejected tomorrow, don’t despair; know that you weren’t accepted because you weren’t smart enough (knowing CCers, I’m positive that’s the case). Yale chose someone else not because that person is better than you; the admissions officers simply felt that person would fit in better with the atmosphere and culture here. And that’s nothing to be disappointed about, because wherever you end up going, you’ll know that you’re there because you belong.

But if you’re accepted tomorrow, I can’t wait to welcome you to New Haven. And if you want to talk to me about Yale, feel free to PM me!

Hey guys, I’m lurking on here because next year, hopefully, I’ll be in the exact same situation as you guys. Haha, I am such a dork! I am living vicariously through all of you. I am so ready to get out of high school. :)

Anyways, I wish you guys the best of luck! Remember, Yale doesn’t define you! Even, silverturtle didn’t get into Yale, and he had an application/resume that would put mine and many others to shame. And he got into Brown, which is another fabulous Ivy! I know as a high school junior that I speak with no knowledge but from others’ experiences, but they have adamantly expressed that college admissions aren’t the end of the road; they’re the BEGINNING. Good luck and MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!

@my88keys LET THE 2017TH HUNGER GAMES BEGIN!
Good luck everyone, you’re all awesome :)

Did they take the Eli Account login page down?

I lied I’m back haha.

314159265, thanks for the words of advice. I’ll definitely take them to heart.
