Next fall, about 20 Yale students will travel to Peking University in Beijing for the first semester of a new joint study abroad program, Yale administrators said Tuesday afternoon.

Yale students who join the Peking University-Yale University Joint Undergraduate Program will live with honors students at Peking, and both groups of students will take classes taught in English by faculty from both universities. Yale administrators said students enrolled in the program will receive full course credit, with all expenses, including airfare, covered by the regular Yale semester tuition. During the program's official unveiling Tuesday afternoon, Yale College Dean Peter Salovey said the new program is meant to expand interest in study abroad.

East Asian languages and literature professor Charles Laughlin will act as the program's resident director and will teach a course on "Contemporary Beijing Culture" that will involve student field trips into the city for cultural events.

"This is unprecedented," Laughlin said. "We are building bridges across programs."

Yalies will be the only students from the United States living with Peking University's Chinese students, as the university's other international students live in separate housing.

"This is a pioneering program, the first of its type in China where U.S. university students would … not just be in a Chinese university, but really live with Chinese students," Yale President Richard Levin said. "I believe it's a great opportunity for significant cross-cultural exchange for students from both sides."

Yale-in-London classes are small and are held in a seminar environment. Courses‚ which earn full Yale credits‚ focus on British history‚ architecture‚ art history‚ literature‚ and drama. Courses are offered in both spring and summer. The Summer Program consists of two‚ six-week long sessions‚ each featuring two courses; the Spring Semester lasts for fifteen weeks and features four courses.

Yale-in-London instructors include Yale University professors and British scholars. At the Paul Mellon Centre, the Director of Studies, Brian Allen, and the Assistant Director for Academic Activities, Frank Salmon‚ are Yale professors and teach in the program. Field trips to museums and historic houses in London and other English cities are an integral part of the program, as are trips to many sites off the tourist track. Drama courses make full use of London's theatre scene, with visits to everything from top West End plays to small, fringe productions, as well as talks by playwrights, directors, and actors.

The Paul Mellon Centre is situated in the heart of London, close to the British Museum and the University of London. The Centre has its own library, classrooms, and students' common room. Student accommodations are provided at convenient, nearby locations. Classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday, generally in the mornings, so that students can explore London or surrounding areas in the afternoons and on weekends. Students are free to visit other parts of Britain or Europe during long weekends or spring midterm break.

All undergraduates are eligible to apply to the Yale-in-London program. Students enrolled in Yale College should note that they do not have to apply for Junior Year Abroad.
