Yale - International Student

Hi! I am a junior in highschool. I am from Europe, and I want to go to USA for college. I have a perfect score (in my country we don’t calculate GPS, just the final grade, from 1 to 10, I have 10 for the moment), I am a national chemistry olympic, used to be math olympic, this year will be my 7th year going to the olympiad. I speak romanian as my native language, but I also studied turkish (I have silver in International Turkish Olympiad, language and dance section). Last year I participated in the International Festival of Language and culture. I will be the president of Interact Club next year, now I’m the Secretary General. I am part of the Red Cross since 9th grade. Also as extracurriculars I participated in Grow, Aspire Academy, and I am the founder and president of European Model Conference Bucharest. I will take the SAT in January for the first time, and also the Chemistry and Math 2 Subject SAT, and maybe French (I took French 4 years), but I think I will have good scores on that (what is the minimum score do you think I should have?). I want to do an Internship in chemistry and business (I’ll do a business internship in summer).
Do you think I have chances to get into Yale?

Keep in mind that Yale is one of the hardest colleges in the U.S. to get into. Even if you’ve got perfect scores and strong extracurriculars, your chances are never going to be higher than 10%, because there’s lots of equally-qualified students competing for admission, and many get an advantage from being from wealthy families that can donate to the college, or play a sport.

On the SAT, you basically want to aim for as close to a 1600 – a perfect score – as possible. And then you hope for the best. I’d make sure their admissions office properly converts your 1 to 10 grading scale to a good GPA!

I think that you have pretty good chances of getting in! You have good ECs and should focus on your tests now; you could say that you have 1/2 done with your ECs and languages, you just need good scores! You should also consider other factors like: income, essays, etc. But I think that you have pretty good chances of getting in! You should also consider other Universities just in case you don’t get in, depending on your major. I am also an international junior (from mexico), I will not be applying to Yale but I wish you luck with your application! @LaviniaTeodorescu

You have a lot of good qualities. You ought to give it a try. At the same time, you should widen your net because as an international student, unconditionally the odd is very small. Good luck! You have many good things going on, and you sound interesting.

Invest in a Fiske guide to identify some more colleges.
You’re competitive but for internationals it means 3% odds vs. Nil…
Three subject tests in different subjects (esp. Including French) is good.
Continue excelling in your studies and pushing in your ec’s.
Plan to apply scea.

@ItsMeYeyo When Yale predicts about a 6% admit rate, what does “pretty good chance” mean? 8%?

For schools like Yale that are extremely generous w/fin aid to international applicants, please know that internationals face the most difficult odds.

It might be illuminating to look at this site.

Knowing how many students were admitted from each country in the past can help one understand what to expect in the future.
