Yale makes Tulane students return to New Orleans

concerneddada - first of all Tulane closed the school and it was then the responsibility of the students and families to have an evacuation plan. I have been through two of these evacuations now so I know what the policy is. Second some students who were living in dorms and unable to evacuate were taken to Jackson State were as luck would have it there was no power or food and allowed to sleep on the gym floor. Third faculty and staff were not evacuated. That is not the policy.

BTW I never recieved any written notification of any aspect of Tulanes policies, precedures, intentions, etc before the middle of November and the schools web site and email were totally out of commission for weeks because the buffoon had no IT disaster recovery plan.

I am a parent, too, freestate, and one who had already paid fall tuition and has had to carry a financial burden that our family feels and will continue to feel from what has happened, as it seems you do. That does not make name-calling a justified or reasonable response.

BTW, my son was one of those evac'ed to Jackson State. He had no problem wth sleeping on the floor and was content with his situation. He even gathered names of those who wanted to go back early and help. I guess we're just looking at different maturity levels here, eh?

I don't know ctymomteacher maybe one of us has just had a longer relationship with the school and administration. As I said we have been through more than one Tulane evacuation and seen a number of other shortcomings in how the school is run. I can tell you my family unlike yours had an evacuation plan and was not dependent on the university. I can also tell you that if you intend to stay down there for another three hurricane seasons you better develope one. Maybe that says something about different maturity levels here, eh?

freestate, I am sorry you are so bitter, but as the father of a TEMS member who himself evacuated to Jackson and took care of the others who were there, you simply have your facts wrong.

All the hyperbole in the world will suffice in the face of facts. I suggest you simply vote with your wallet and go elsewhere. Indeed, why did you not simply withdraw your child and be done with it – your tuition $$$ would have been refunded in that case.

BTW, this was not our first evacuation, we lived through Ivan as well. And, again, since my son is a TEMS member, I know firsthand the detailed disaster plan Tulane has in place.

As one who has more invested in the school in terms of money and time than you I can tell you that I am getting very sick of being told to pack up and move on. Why don't you folks who have barely spent a couple of hours on Tulane's campus pack up and shove off instead?

For anybody not directly involved in Tulane stil reading this thread and wondering what all the vitriol is about you need to understand that the president of Tulane Scott Cowen has near cult-like following among a segment of Tulane families. Even the mildest criticism of the man and the school's policies will bring these folks out to launch ad hominem assualts that always end with - "just withdraw and go elsewhere we don't want you."

This is the second thread about Tulane's displaced students. Time has come to accept the situation and take a more peaceful view. Thank you for expressing your feelings. The thread is now closed.
