Hello ,need some advice desperately .My son has been granted full ride at Yale - NUS (Singapore),He also got into Cornell ,Dartmouth , UCLA & CMC but all without any fin-aid. ,wants to major in comparative-lit,. Am in a fix as he really wants to go to Cornell due to the ivy tag, is it really worthwhile.He is an international applicant (India)
Can you afford the other schools without getting yourself in a huge debt? If yes, the the answer depends on whether your child wants to live in the us or the singapore. YALE NUS also carries the ivy tag, even if not being the Yale in New Haven. It mainly depends on finances, location, etc
Thanks for the reply .What I basically wanted to know is that even if one could afford it would it be worthwhile doing so ,is the difference b/w yale-nus & cornell / Dartmouth big enough to justify it , how would you rate the three esp. for humanities (lit./global affairs/history ) .The yale-nus common curriculam sounds impressive .
According to me Yale NUS is a better option
@ShaunakK98 - please elaborate .
Not many opinions coming through . Isn’t yale nus a better place to pursue liberal arts as compared to Cornell & Dartmouth even if we put the cost factor aside for a while ? Any inputs from those accepted recently, .did anyone chose it over ivy league colleges ?
Ok, @jvp. Yale NUS is soooo much cooler. Plus, who wants to be in debt? Not me!
Does your son want to ultimately work in Singapore, India or the US? The answer to this question will ultimately make it easier to decide.
The Yale-NUS program does sound impressive, but the problem with it is that if he goes to the US with a Yale-NUS degree most hiring managers won’t know anything about it. If he wants to stay in Singapore, then its a great option.
Cornell and Dartmouth are similar, although Dartmouth is quite remote. Cornell is a lot larger and has some additional options in case he changes his mind from comparative literature.
Full pay for Dartmouth and Cornell can be quite expensive – approx $250K USD (2 crore INR). Are you willing to pay this amount of money for a college degree? His job prospects as a comparative literature major may be limited unless he goes to graduate school.
Best of luck
Agree with sgopal2. The education at Yale-NUS is all said and done going to be (for now) Singapore driven. That said, in 20 years, we don’t know which country will be the mecca, but odds are that an international experience will be a part of it.
Is the full ride for all 4 years? is that merit-based (Yale-NUS Global Leadership Scholarship) or need-based?
Thanks @sgopal2 & antialias. He has already decided in favour of Cornell…The full ride was the merit-based(Yale-NUS Global Leadership Scholarship for 4yrs.
