Yale OR...Stanford?

I'm a low-income student. How will I be affected by the social scene at each school with my situation?

Also, I live in California, and Stanford is like 45 minutes from my home, so it is much more convenient. I know travel cost to Yale and back for breaks and stuff will be very expensive and inconvenient. How important do you guys think this should be in my decision?

I have a friend that currently attends Yale who comes from a moderate income family, and I have of yet to hear him complain about the social scene. On the contrary he raves about the vast amount of things he does on a regular basis most of which are free to students or of relatively cheap. So you shouldn't be too concerned with money and the social scene at Yale, I can't speak for Stanford. Secondly being close to home while convenient really does not allow you to truly experience college. A 45 minute car ride is really nothing in terms of getting out of your comfort zone. I know that traveling back and forth during break from Yale to California might be expensive but if you book really early on Orbitz or another traveling site I can assume that you might get a round trip for 300. I recently traveled to San Fran for only 270 on US Airways, so that should be manageable for you. From what I understand the breaks at Yale are considerably lengthy so you will be away from campus for a month (am I correct in saying this?) for winter recess and a little more than week for spring break, and obviously you might not want to come home every break (this depends on your family bonds). Overall, you can't make a wrong decision, but go to Yale!

Yale financial aid will often cover the round trip expenses of traveling to New Haven.

Also, the 12 colleges at Yale all have their own endowments, which they use to subsidize more events than you can imagine. You can pay $5 to go to a Broadway show in New York, or a Yankees game, or any other event. And these events are held multiple times per week--in addition to school-funded organizations' activities, there's no end to what you can do at Yale even if you don't spend any money.

So Yale will actually pay for my round trip expenses to and from New Haven to California?

Is that included in the fin-aid package?

Travel costs should be included in your Financial Aid package. If you don't feel like they're adequately reflected, you should contact the Financial Aid office and see what they can do to help.

I was accepted to both Yale and Stanford as well. However, I have ruled out Yale and my decision comes down to Stanford and Harvard.

I only ruled out Yale because I intend to major in physics or math, which is not what Yale i known for. Otherwise, Yale and Stanford are both such amazing schools, very tough decision. I can sympathize.

Yale is very strong in Drama, Humanities, and Psych departments. I agree that the residential college system adds a lot of community to the campus. Yale is more Ivy-League, New England-ish, and Stanford is spread out in California. Both great schools, different atmospheres.

Personally I'd choose Yale. But it depends on you.

Had exact same decision 4 years ago. Originally from East coast, I was sure I would go to Yale, just because the name is 'bigger' there. Visited both schools for admit weekends, and chose Stanford - I just didn't like New Haven and gloomy weather. Also the fact I was going to major in Biology played a big role.
Not saying I hated Yale and I would have been miserable had I gone Yale- I am sure I would have been as happy there. But the past four years at Stanford was gorgeous, got great education in both bio and economics, and was able to work in a prestigious lab for more than two years.
Another thing Stanford has to offer is entrepreneurial spirit. If you are thinking about launching your own venture company or have a business idea, it's definitely a place to be. I was a premed when I started and I am still a bio major, but got interested in business and headed to a private equity firm next year.
I am sure you heard this gazillion times, but really, you can't go wrong. I would personally recommend Stanford just because I had a great time there, but definitely visit both schools and think where you would fit in more.

If I had the choice I would go to Stanford because of Silicon Valley...

But then I am only a lowly junior

Thanks, slee07!

I know I can't go wrong at either school. I'm going to be visiting both for the admit programs, and that will be the final deciding factor, as I have virtually no other terms to compare them, except fin-aid, which is barely an issue as I know I can manage both financially with their packages.

Obviously posting this in the Yale forum will give you some kind of biased responses.

Yes, I am well aware of that. That is why I also made the same topic in the Stanford forum.

something stupid, and I have no clue what the outcome is going to be:
on which forum did you get the most responses?

This thread is three years old. You’re not likely to get a response from the OP.

wow u got into stanford ? kool i mean this is my dream to go there  congratz btw if i were u i would definately prefer stanford

Search tool says OP went to Yale. Nothing more to add to this three year old thread.
