Yale Political Science vs. Duke Public Policy

Hi all,

I am currently deciding between Yale and Duke. Can someone please compare the political science major at Yale to the public policy major at Duke? Thanks in advance.

I’m not very familiar with the public policy major but I know that it is highly regarded.

(Duke is #2, Yale is not ranked in the top 10)

(Duke is #9, Yale is not ranked in the top 10)

^ Disclaimer: All rankings should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Having changed majors three times during my undergraduate years, I hope you will avoid primarily basing your college selection on the relative merits of Yale’s Political Science major to Duke’s public policy major. Keep in mind that about 75% of undergraduates end up changing their major ( https://dus.psu.edu/mentor/2013/06/disconnect-choosing-major/ ). Moreover, I am sure both majors at these institutions are outstanding. If this comparison is one of many factors you will consider in your decision process, then I hope someone in CC who is very knowledgble about both programs will step in. Still, try to visit both schools and ascertain where you could be happiest and which school is best across the many majors you might remotely be interested in. Combining exellence with breadth is most important at the undergraduate level. Yale does this exceptionally well and I suspect Duke also shines in this important dimension.

And congratulations on the outstanding choices before you !!!

You have two truly excellent choices. Congratulations! My two cents are to not let anyone else make the decision for you. The next four years are about you. If you use your brain, listen to your heart, and follow your gut, you will know which is the best one for you. Best of luck!
